HIV DUO TESTS AT 47 DAYS - SYMPTOMS ARE TELLING ME TEHY ARE WRONG???

Hi Dr's,

(UK Resident)

My girlfriend and I broke up recently, stupidly I turned to an ex girlfriend for comfort, we had unprotected vaginal sex twice in 2 days.

Within 2 days of this, my girlfriend and I got back together, I had asked the "ex" who I had had the sexual encounters with if she had had any partners, she said "two but both had been protected".

My concern about HIV, my ex developed symtoms such as Swollen glands, temperature, saw throat, loss of voice within 5 weeks of her sexual encounters, I am not fully sure I believe it was protected you see.

Within a week of me sleeping with the ex, I developed a toung ulcer, I also had a light white coating on the tounge which seems to come and go, it's not heavy and quite often dissapears after drinking or eating.  I also have had a "tickly" throat for around four weeks now, it does not hurt in the slightest but I know it is there...

As I mentioned, I got back with the girl I had broken up with, because the ex had assured me she had had safe sex I then continued an unprotected sexual relationship with my girlfriend.

In the 7 weeks or so weeks since this has happened, she has developed a cough, - been with her for about three weeks, - just a tickly cough and she suffers from Bronchitus anyway.  She has also last week developed a small mouth ulcer which she has had in the past anyway, last week she had dry eyes,a headache behind her eyes, felt sick and fatigued.

I have also felt pins and needles down the one side of my body, lost about 1KG in wieght-pos anxiety?
I have had the below tests done..

24Day-Duo Blood Test
27Day-Duo Inst Strip Test
28Day-Duo Inst Strip Test
31Day-Duo Blood Test
38Day-Duo Blood Test
47Day-Duo Blood Test
All Negative.

My question after all of the above is,-are these tests conclucive?
Have you ever seen a negative Duo at six weeks turn positive?
Do I need at 12 week test or just move on and forget about it?
Are these just conincidnces?
Thanks in advance..

Welcome to the forum.

Without even reading your quesition -- which I have not yet done -- I probably can give you an accurate reply based only on the title.  It is not possible to have HIV and have a negative duo test (for both HIV antibody and p24 antigen) 47 days after exposure.  Also, test results always overrule symptoms; there are no exceptions.  Therefore, it doesn't matter what symptoms you may have.  They are not due to HIV.

Now I have read the question itself.  I nailed it.

In addition to the test results and timing, you describe an essentially zero risk situation with respect to HIV, i.e. it is exceedingly unlikely your partner is infected.  Further, your symptoms are not typical for HIV, despite what you think you learned by searching online or elsewhere.  And even if they were, it wouldn't matter:  symptoms identical to HIV usually are due to other, more common, day-to-day infections.  To your specific questions:

1) Your test results are conclusive.
2) It doesn't matter what sort of cases I have seen personally.  Nobody has ever had a patient with negative duo test at 47 days who later tested positive.
3) You should not have any more tests for HIV.

If you or your partner continue to have symptoms you are concerned about, see a doctor or clinic.  But you can be 100% confident you did not catch HIV from the exposures described.

You don't have HIV.  Suck it up and move on.  This thread is over; I have neither patience nor time for questioners who are unwilling or unable to accept reasoned reassurance and advice; if you keep it up, the entire thread will be deleted.  And do not be tempted to start a new thread with the same questions; it would suffer the same fate, without reply and without refund of the posting fee.

Dr.

Thank you for all of your candid advice, it is appreciated.

I am definitly "sucking it up" and I feel much much more relaxed now.

It would seem pointless starting a new thread to ask the same questions, - I know my concerns have taken allot of reassurance & I Thank You for your prompt responses.

I am HIV negative!! :)

Best Regards,

Dr, Thanks so much for your help, it is truly appreciated.

This has for me been one of the scariest (prob the scariest) time of my life, every possible emotion from Guilt, Fear has shown up.

Even now writing this I am having a pain under my right arm and that starts me thinking "what if..."..

I fully understand I need to move on from this and believe me, I am trying too.

I appreciate you have closed the thread but may I just ask, my Dr has just prescribed a one week course of "Flucoazole" 50mcg just to combat the very light coating on my tounge, - she says my throat is still red and it has been this way for five weeks now.

I am siceptible to allergies, my only question is, with this prescription for potential Thrush, am I still okay to move on and not worry about HIV?

Please do answer Dr, I will post no more following.

Also, I sincerely do appreciate your time on this.

This last sevenish weeks has been a horrid rolercaoster of a ride, I have changed my life in many ways so this NEVER happens again.

I am also looking into CBT to help with my anxiety over things Dr so I have heeded your advice.

Yours Truly,

Yes, even with all that, my opinion and advice are unchanged.

Your question about 3 month testing is irrelevant.  The apparent disagreements about 6 weeks versus 3 months or other intervals apply only to stand-alone antibody testing.  The p24 compoment of the duo test resolves that issue and makes testing 100% reliable by 4 weeks.  Here are a couple of threads that discuss these issues:

http://www.medhelp.org/posts/HIV-Prevention/Need-your-help/show/1345664

If you cannot get beyond this despite such overwhelming scientific evidence and repeated, reasoned reassurance -- not only by me, I am sure -- then counseling may be in order.  It is not normal to have so much difficulting accepting such evidence.  I suggest it out of compassion, not criticism.

That will be all for this thread.  Do try to move on.

Thanks for your response Dr.

So, even with Girl 1 havimg symptoms & both myself and girl 2 having symptoms you really would not worry??
I notice that many people on the forum such as Teak really do insist on a 3 month window, - is this just "playing by outdated rules"?
I really do want to believe that I am HIV Negative but it is in my head 24 hours a day, - the test they use at the clinic is a 4th Gen which looks for the Antibodies 1/2 and Antigen too, - I take it this is the same as the Duo?

Can I really just move on now and forget about this?? Given all the symptoms and your waelth of experience?? Can I just move on Dr?

With Sincere Thanks..
