Advice

I have a few question. I haven't slept much in the past 6 weeks. My friend was getting attacked and I had to help out as we were out numbered.Unfortunately I got my front tooth knocked out. Had a serious scratch on my chest (that was bleeding) I believe it was 2 different guys, one who knocked my front tooth out and the other who scratched the skin of my chest. I believe that the guys fist was bleeding when he punched me in the tooth.
I got tested its been 6 weeks today. I got my results and it was Negative.
Do i need further testing ?

I was playing basketball with a few friends after the game I noticed a deep scratch on my wrist right under a huge vein. And it was scraped, I don't know how to describe it but little minute dots of blood as if it was scraped....
Pretend he is HIV positive and he was bleeding under the finger nail as he scratched me. Would that be enough
to pass the virus ?

Do i need more testing ? or can i live my life without ever having to take another test ?

I have no idea how many people have been infected with HIV in a fight.  I took a guess with "I'll bet not 10 people in the US".  Probably it in fact is zero.  Either way, your risk of HIV was near zero.

And I already said you do not have to wait for another test ; your 6 week test is definitive.  That is the consistent advice on this forum as well as in Australia, Massachusetts, and from many other experts as well.  But if you want still more reassurance, have a duo (also called combo) test, which measures HIV p24 antigen as well as antibody.  The duo test is 100% reliable any time after 4 weeks.

This sounds to me like you are still reacting emotionally to the fight itself, which of course is entirely natural -- i.e. post-traumatic stress disorder.  But don't let that interfere with a cool, objective, thoughtful response to the potential health consequences of the fight.  Almost certainly there are none, other than the possible mental health impact.

That's all I'll have to say.  Mellow out about HIV; you shouldn't be at all worried about it.

10 people have caught it from a fight ? I thought i read that there has never been a documented case like this.

I can't wait another 6 weeks to be 100 percent certain. This has been the toughest 6 weeks of my life. I've read that massachusetts and I believe it was Australia that state 6 weeks is conclusive.

Welcome to the forum.

You apparently have seen or heard stories that would suggest any contact with another person's blood, no matter how minor or serious, carries a signicant risk of HIV. In fact, I'll be not 10 people in the US have ever caught HIV from a fight, being mugged, etc.  Theoreticaly it could happen, but obviously it rarely does.

In any case, the modern HIV tests almost always are positive within 6 weeks of exposure.  You can be sure you were not infected, do not need additional testing, and for sure you should just live your life without worry.  However, some experts recommend a final test at 3 months -- so you certainly could do that if an additional negative test will help get you past your worry about it.  But if it were me, I wouldn't feel any need for it.

Best wishes--  HHH, MD
