Hello again Doctor.
Today at 5 weeks after exposure I did a 4th generation HIV test and the result is negative.
How conclusive is a 5 week negative 4th generation hiv test ?Or is it just reassuring ?
A lot of people say that only at 12 weeks is a test conclusive.
Others say at 8 weeks but nobody says at 5 weeks .
Can I relax now or repeat the test at 12 weeks ?
My test was hiv test combi method ECLIA ....
Typically, if a person has the ARS, antibody tests for HIV are positive within 4-5 days of the beginning of the symptoms. EWH
Thanks doctor.One more question
Generally speaking..if ARS occurs ...after how many days since the begining of ARS symptoms does an HIV test turn positive?
Welcome to our Forum. I'm glad to hear that you are committed to having safe sex and am sorry to hear of your condom failure. Condoms do fail about 1% of the time but they remain the best way to make sure that you do not acquire STDs, including HIV, even if you did enter your partner. Please continue to use them.
Your risk from a single exposure of this sort is rare. Here are the reasons why:
1. Most commercial sex workers do not have HIV.
2. Even if your partner has HIV, the risk of infection from a single episode of sexual activity is only 1 infection for every 1000 acts of vaginal intercourse.
Thus, the chance that you have HIV from this exposure is statistically low.
As for your symptoms, they are unlikely to be due to HIV. I say this because proctitis is not a consequence of penile sex. In addition, there are many, many other possible causes of fever.
All of what I said however is based on probability and if you want to be sure your problems are not due to HIV, then I have the following suggestions. Go on and get tested. At this time, if you have acquired HIV from the exposure you mention, your 4th generation test will be positive., When you get the result, which I suspect will be negative, then believe the results- they are reliable at this time.
I hope these comments are helpful. EWH
