At 51 days post exposure your results will be available at a time when over 95% of persons who hasd acquired HIV wiould have positive tests. Given the very, very low risk nature of your exposure, I would urge you to accept those results (they will be negative) as final. EWH
Hello Doctors,
I have a testing question. I booked an appointment at a local HIV testing clinic for October 31st. I still have my appointment this Friday. The appointment comes 51 days post-exposure. Is this enough time for a conclusive result in respect to the Medmira 3rd generation rapid HIV test that they are using?
Thank you for your answer Doctor,
I am just worried because a week after that encounter i had unprotected sex with my gf on a few occasions. Do you think i put her at risk of getting infected?
Please relax. Your exposure was protected and as you know from visiting the site, protection works,. Your risk is close to zero and I am confident your tests will confirm this. As for your specific questions:
1. Your STD results will be conclusive. You HIV will technically not be since it can take up to 12 weeks for all persons who acquire HIV to get positive tests. In your low risk situation however, any test from six weeks onward (this is when 95% of HIV tests would have been expected to be positive) should be taken as conclusive.
2. No
3. There is no medical indication for further testing in this situation. If your anxiety is unchecked following the negative test results you will get, then get a repeat HIV test any time six weeks beyond your exposure. When those tests are negative, forget about your concerns and move on.
4. Yes, you are worrying more than is necessary. Your concerns are understandable however. I hope my comments will be helpful to you. EWH
