What are the chances?...

Hi doctor,
About 9 months ago my girlfriend had confessed to me that she made a big mistake and had unprotected vaginal sex 2 times with one of her male friends.  We made it through this tough time and she wanted to get tested. This guy has told her many of times that she has nothing to worry about but im still skeptical b/c I know guys can easily lie. (He is white, 21 yr. old, non-IV drug user and not bi/gay.) Well, she tested 72 days after she last had sex with this guy and all her STD tests came back negative, including HIV-1 antibody test also negative. She told me she wanted to be very sure so she went to test again for HIV exactly 17 weeks after her last exposure with this guy, negative too. I have over the past few months come down with a flu-like illness on 2 separate occasions- fever, chills, fatigue sore throat, only lasting 3 days each. This made me very worried after I read about ARS symptoms, even after she had her 2 negative tests. some questions:
1. Do I have to worry about these symptoms as being related to HIV?
2. Even if she did infect me 2 separate times and they were ARS would I have gotten symptoms twice?
3.) Also, we have sex about once or twice a week. Neither of us has any open sores on our genitals. What would the likelihood be that she infected me more than once through vaginal secretions?
4.) I am worried about her. I love her so much. so doc, what are the chances that this guy had HIV, gave it to her after 2 times having unprotected vaginal sex, and then her not testing positive at 4 months?  Please give me and estimate to make me feel better. Thanks Doc. Your knowledge and opinions mean everything.

Your test result proves you don't have HIV.  Therefore the disucussion about your symptoms is irrelevant and a waste of everyone's time.  If you want to continue, take any further discussion over to the HIV support forum.

This will be my last one...forgot to ask before...

2 weeks after my 3 day flu-like illness subsided I got itchy bumps on my legs. Do you believe this is poison ivy, or in a real ARS situation would symptoms fully leave like my illness and then something different would appear? or does it all have to occur at once?..i hope you can answer this specific question...forgot to ask it in original post.

im done asking after this

lanny: Yes, symptoms of ARS typically last at least a couple of weeks.

TheRock:  If your doc was "completely discouraged" from believing you have HIV, there probably is no point in posting a question on this forum.  A personal provider's evaluation almost always is more reliable.  Anyway, almost certainly your question has been asked and answered before.  Use the search link to find similar questions and replies.

Is there anyone that can provide there email address for me to discuss symptoms of mine? I have about 10 enlarged lymph nodes around the ground, and swollen glands in the neck, but some other things that would completely discourage a doctor from suggesting acute hiv.. let me know who can help, thanks

thanks all that helped.  I do plan on being with her for the rest of my life.  I always get that small fear in the back of my mind when one day she gets a test for HIV when she is pregnant, if her test would change to a positive.  Could her body have not made any antibodies?

Also, when you said "Anyway, other things are far more likely than HIV for the sort of symptoms you describe, especially with each time lasting only for 3 days."

do you mean here that symptoms of ARS would last longer than 3 days?...would ARS symptoms gradually fade?

Relax.  Your partner's negative HIV test 17 weeks after potential exposure is proof she didn't catch HIV, and therefore that your symptoms cannot be due to HIV (assuming you had no other exposures that you don't know about).  Anyway, other things are far more likely than HIV for the sort of symptoms you describe, especially with each time lasting only for 3 days.

So the direct answers to your questions are:  1) No.  2) No.  3) Since she doesn't have HIV, she cannot infect you, regardless of the frequency with which you have sex.  4) No chance.

You have nothing to worry about if YOU havent done anything to put you at risk for HIV. Her test prooves she wasnt infected and couldnt have infected you. There is nothing to worry about.
