Head Trauma with many symptoms

by pfkukrak, Oct 09, 2009 06:35AM
My daughter, 35 years of age, had a head injury in July. She collided in a pool with a child wearing goggles and loss consiousness only briefly lucily the child was not hurt at all. She hit him right between her eyes. Since this there have been many symptoms. Headaches, peripheral vision in one eye, dropping things, weakness, extreme loss of weight, UTI's, very low blood pressure especially at night 60/50. When the accident happened she was taken to the hospital ER and released a few hours later. She then was sent to a neurologist that ran several tests and said it was PTS. He gave her medicine and followed up at a later date. She couldn't raise her head of the pillow and she was taken to the local ER and was admitted back to the hospital with high fever, pains in the back and side, unable to urinate, extremely low blood pressure, checked her for meneangitis and other things. The next day they put her in ICU to administer Dopamine to help with the low blood pressure. The dopamine shot the blood pressure up high as soon as the liquid reached her body and they had to stop the med. She had several doctors treating her but there was never a diagnosis. After a week they sent her home only a little better than when she was admitted. Her nurologist treated her while she was there and changed some of her meds. He doesn't think it is related to the injury. He sent her to a new General Practice doctor to see if it something else was wrong. He thinks it head related or heart related so she saw a cardiologist yesterday and he really doesn't think it is related to the heart but he wants her to wear a heart monitor for a month but he has to order it and that will take 2 weeks. I am very very concerned as to why these docotrs can not find out what is causing these symptons. She is trying to see another nurologist but can't get an appointment until sometime in December. What is happening to her while we are waiting for all these tests. Prior to this accident she was healthy, ate healthy, went to the gym and was a picture of health and now since the accident has lost 32 lbs. and looks anorexic, she is 6 foot 3. She has no energy and basically sits around tired all the time. We live in Virginia and I would like to know if anyone has had the same problems after a head injury and where is the best place to get her help.

Hi,
I also have head injury and lot of symptoms like your daughter.  It may be Post Concussion Syndrome.  I am disability and docs (PCP, Neurologists) don't have much idea about it.  it is just wait and see right now hoping things get better.  every day different symptoms repeat.

Hyperthyroidism can result from brain injury and result in extreme weight loss. Has she been tested for that? Blood pressure and temperature swings can also result from such a head injury. Headaches are the most common symptom and loss of peripheral vision is another.

It sound that your daughter has gotten a brain trauma.  Adjusting a level of blood pressure can be followed of the trauma.  Could you find a neurologist who is specialised in head traumas and whiplash.

Is she taken MRI of her head.  It should be taken in a month after the injury.  Later on it is more likely not to see brain traumas so well in MRI.  Also neuropsykological testing should be taken to find out if there is a lack of memory and so on.

In the following thesis you can find out what kind of symptoms might be after whiplash also.

I had a trauma with bike.  I had a short loss in consiousness and I have brain trauma, which can't be seen in MRI.
