I was diagnossed whith afib at the age of 27 now they tell me that I have an enlarge LA at the age of 47. Will this condition continew to worsen Ps Ihave also had two TIA's please tell me am I in trouble
bommy, your findings - as you describe them - are insignificant.
amy, your findings are also not that impressive - although the "moderate" designation for someone your age will at least be something worth following.
Don't be shocked if your next echo shows "mild". The difference between mild and moderate grades are sometimes in the eye of the reader.
In either case, though, let me say that I would have to scan each of you myself to say anything with great confidence, but, just going off of what you've said, I wouldn't be anywhere NEAR panic mode if I were either of you.
Just relax and be prudent in following whatever advice the Doc's give you, and if your symptoms worsen or you develop new cardiac or respiratory type symptoms, don't be affraid to have another echo down the line. And also, if possible, consider having it done at a different facility and read by a different cardiologist than your last. And don't share your history of "Mitral Regurgitation" with them unless the ordering Dr.insists. This will avoid the possibility of over-reading a new study to "match" the previous.
I think this happens in some facilities, unfortunately.
oh i forget to mention i have a 2 yr old and would love to have another child but am scared since my diagnosis has progressed
HI. I am also 31 yrs old i have the same thing as you expect i have moderate not mild and also have dilation of left atrium and am scared to death as well. i am going for a second opionion this week and back again to the orginal cardio. please let me know any info you find out as well!
Mild or trivial regurgitation is almost always considered medically insignificant and not an common presence.
Left atrium measurement with an echo is an estimate! I don't see any connection with left atrium enlargement. The left atrium can/will enlarge when there is intra-chamber pressure i.e. stenosis (narrow opening) of the mitral valve, etc. The issues are unrelated, there shouldn't be any concern regarding the valves, but LA enlargement, if significant should be of minor concern for the underlying cause. It is possible the LA dminsions are normal for you!
