Any real differences between generic medications?

I was on metropropol succ and now because I transferred my prescription to a different pharmacy I am on metroprolol er. What is the difference?

The original drug producer is given the exclusive right to sell their  drug on the open market to recover the cost of research and development for a period of time. After the exclusive right has lapsed, a generic drug company, can replicate the medication.  There should not be a medical difference, the difference usually is a lower price due to free market competition.   .
