Dying and the affects on the heart...?

I am currently working on a novel and having a rather hard time getting an answer to a burning question. One of my characters has died at least once on the operating table. I merely wonder what sort of lasting affect that has on the heart.

I have "died" once as a teenager and my husband i have lost 3 times. One of the times he was , thank God, in the emergency room and could not take the IV med he was given. He is such a nut that afterward said that Saint Peter gave him the winning lottery numbers and he forgot them. He was not "out" long any of the times and it has not effected him anymore then anything else in life. He has a pacemaker defibrilator and is going to have to go in for a 2nd oblation. Pray for him. He is not a cat with 9 lives but i am counting on another one anyway. His wife Jean

You're welcome. I'm not a doctor; I'm just a person with a life long oddball heart. To get detailed answers about the effects of near death experiences on the body, it would be best to talk to a doctor or even a med student. Good luck on your book.

Interesting question. I'm not sure there's much effect on the heart muscle itself unless the person has been dead for a long time. Usually in that setting (an operating room) they do all they can to keep the heart pumping, usually manually if it's stopped. The bigger concern is the lack of good blood/oxygen perfusion to the brain. Many people who have had that type of death experience and brought back experience changes in the brain that often affect memory, personality or physical abilities similar to having a stroke. And like a stroke, the effects may be temporary or permanent.
