Thanks again for another helpful response. There is so much out there about how MVP can cause anxiety, breathing problems etc., it's possible to get carried away... as a long time anxiety/depression sufferer, I was kind of hoping for a concrete physical explanation for my symptoms. It's somehow neater and easier to blame the organ rather than the mind or the emotions. Thanks again for the clarity.
MOST people with MVP have no symptoms. Mild MVP can cause some symptoms, but those are certainly not dangerous. Even those who occasionally do get some don't necessarily get worked up about them.
My teenaged son gets over 1600 PVC/PACs a day, his Mitral Valve tip is moderately sclerotic and he has MR but he doesn't even feel them. He never thinks about his heart and would rather skip a check up. So having symptoms doesn't cause the anxiety about the heart. FEELING them causes some people great anxiety.
It seems that the condition itself is not directly causing the anxiety.
One person will get, and feel, a flutter and be fine with it and another will get very upset about it, fixate on it even though they are informed and know it's not dangerous.
Stress level is much about how people react to things, not always about the things themselves. Mild MVP is basically nothing so reacting to it with great distress seems to indicate a propensity to do that.
Ordinary benign heart palpitations are not a real problem. The reaction some have to them is a problem for them and makes them unhappy. It's a cycle and one way out of it is to disrupt it somehow or another.
Nothing and nobody is perfect or can control everything. For some people medications for the beat/symptoms works well. It's certainly worth a try if the stress over them is really bad.
Thanks for the responses. It's very interesting to think of the MVP and the anxiety as unrelated. I have been reading about how MVP is an autonomic nervous system disorder and I was actually hoping that
the MVP could explain the anxious symptoms I have always chalked up to Generalized Anxiety Disorder, which has been diagnosed by more than 1 or 2 shrinks. It's also interesting to hear that some people have no symptoms whatsoever. Are there any experts out there who really have the answers?
So very many people have MVP that some also happen to have anxiety as well. Likely they are separate issues since most people with MVP do not have symptoms/anxiety about it at all.
I have not been officially diagnosed with MVP but I do have MVP Syndrome which is dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system and many MVPers have it.
You should do a search on MVP and MVP Syndrome. You will find that alot of people (myself included) suffer from the same symptoms. Doctors often say that MVP does not cause any symptoms and for most people, that is probably true, but there are alot of people out there suffering.
Good luck!
