No Reductions in Cholestrol Levels post CABG Surgery

Hi ,
My Father underwent a CABG with 3 grafts about 3 months ago. Now he is doing fine. But yesterday when i took him for a Blood Test, To my surprise i saw no change in his Cholestral Levels. Today i accompanied him to our Cardiologist. but he took it very easily , He said that he'll start the medication process.

My Question here is.... Shouldnt the Cholestrol Levels decrese Post CABG Surgery. Also, He is doing good amount of Exercise everyday.

Please find below a detailed information of his Cholestrol report Post CABG .

Serum Cholestrol : 337
LDL Cholestrol : 267
HDL Cholestrol : 46
VLDL : 24

Kindly advise whether it is Normal or are these the complications post CABG Surgery...

Thanks & Regards,
Mohammed.

Cholesterol levels will not go down unless something is done to change the underlying cause. Your father's numbers are well over the recommended levels. The AHA recommends an LDL level of under 70 for individuals with current heart disease so your father has a long way to go.

In his case, he's going to need to change to a low fat, low cholesterol and cut back on all empty carbs like breads, sugars and pastas. In addition, he will most likely require the use of a statin in order to help his body process cholesterol.

His high cholesterol was most likely a big factor in his heart disease. It is important he follows his doctor's advise to lower these numbers.

Hope this helps,

Jon

His numbers were very unhealthy before his procedure so the increase after is not as much as I feared. This may very well be in line with the results of the trauma. I'm surprised his doctors did not start him on a statin after surgery.

On a positive note, the statin will drop his levels very quickly, usually 20-25% within the first few weeks. The key is to get his LDL under 70, the statins may very well do that along with diet changes and any exercise he is allowed to perform.

The direct LDL-C, like calculated LDL-C, should be measured when you are healthy and "metabolically stable." Illness, surgery, trauma, a heart attack, sudden weight loss or gain can all temporarily affect LDL levels. It is possible for your father's LDL to be increased after surgery. Do you know what his LDL was before by-pass?

Hi Jon,
Appreciate your quick response.. i would like to inform you that the numbers of my father's cholestrol were comparatively less. I am kinda worried as our Cardio Thoracic Surgeon never gave him any prescription with regards to the Cholestrol..

I understand that unless and until he starts burning that bad cholestrol, Its never gonna come down. Hence, I wanted to know , Can this be termed as a Complication of Post CABG that there is a Suttle increase in his Cholestrol Levels or is it a normal sign post CABG and that he must start working out to reduce it.

Thanks
Mohammed.
