Pain caused by edema?

With a leaky mitral valve can edema cause sharp left shoulder pain? The pain happens in the evening when my legs are swollen. Leaning forward makes it worse as does lying down.

The only way a mitral valve disorder can cause symptoms is when there is a substantial decrease in cardiac output....that would take a moderate to severe reguritation.  The regurgitation (back flow) of blood into the left atrium, would impede normal blood flow and blood would back up into the system and fluids would leak into tissues causing the swelling (edema)of the peripherals. If you have the reduced cardiac output from a leaking valve you would have other symptoms as well such as shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, fast heart rate, etc.

Sometimes there is a sharp shoulder pain due to insufficient blood flow to heart cells, but more often there is chest pain.  So if MV regurgition is serious enough to cause a reduction of blood flow to the heart cells there could possibly be shoulder pain. Heart failure, kidney failure, or liver failure should be ruled out as well a blood clots within the leg vessels.

Hope this provides an insight that can help you in consultation with your doctor.  Thanks for sharing, and if you have any further questions or comments you are welcome to respond.  Take car,

Ken.
