Plavix vs Pradaxa

My husband was prescribed Pradaxa by ER Doctor. My insurance is not paying for it and its cost is 280.00 where I live. The other ER Doctor sent a Prescription for Plavix which is covered.  Is this a good choice? He was referred to an Internist and Urologist for prompt treatment. He is 47 and has had irregular heart beats incidents.

Both drugs are some what the same, they both work by keeping your blood platelets from sticking together and forming clots. Plavix is a adenosine diphosphate (ADP) receptor and Pradaxa is a direct thrombin inhibitor. Both do basically the same thing just in different ways. Pradaxa is normally used in the treatment of blood clots due to A-fib or other rhythm issues when there is no heart valve disease and Plavix is a stronger drug used to help prevent clots in the arteries primarily after heart surgery.

Both are good drugs and either should work from what I understand.

Hope this helps,

Jon
