Why does my heart feel like its struggling to take blood?

Once in a while i can feel my heart beat once or twice and then stops and it feels like it struggles to get blood and it empties before it returns to normal, and it usually lasts a few seconds. After that i get a weird feeling in my chest and sometimes, but not always, i can taste a slight hint of blood in my mouth. I say that it struggles to get blood because it feels like when you try to suck air from an empty bottle but there is little air left. I used to get really painful chest pain but that was rare and it stopped happening. I never went to see a doctor. What could it be?

Thanks a lot.

Your heart never has to 'struggle' to take up blood.  There are huge blood vessels near the top of the heart that essentially just 'dump' blood into the atria, the chambers that receive blood.  Then there are valves, trap doors, that open and let blood into the ventricles just below, as shown here:

What  you are describing sounds like the sensation of a Premature Ventricular Contraction or 'PVC.'  It's a beat that occurs a bit too early in the pumping cycle.  Everyone has them, but not everyone feels them.  In most people, they are benign.  You can google Premature Ventricular Contraction for more information.
