Your heart never has to 'struggle' to take up blood. There are huge blood vessels near the top of the heart that essentially just 'dump' blood into the atria, the chambers that receive blood. Then there are valves, trap doors, that open and let blood into the ventricles just below, as shown here:

What you are describing sounds like the sensation of a Premature Ventricular Contraction or 'PVC.' It's a beat that occurs a bit too early in the pumping cycle.
