Rapid Heart Rate

Hello, I am a 42 yo male, I have been having a rapid heart rate for at least 6 month, I am 185lbs, 5'11", I am in good shape, my resting pulse stays at 100 to 110 bpm, whenever I do anything, walk outside it goes to 120+bpm, if I walk outside in the heat it goes to 130 to 150 bpm, I get very light headed and dizzy, if I go to the gym and try to work out on the machines(not cardio) it goes to 160s+bpm and I get dizzy and weak and feel sick, I have a very difficult time sleeping also, 2 months ago I had a full nuculear cardiac work up done, and they said everything was ok, then they check my thyroid and it showed hyperthyroidism, my last thyroid test was 2 weeks ago and it came back normal, the dr put me on a beta blocker,it seemed to help a little with the palpatations, but i stil have the rapid pulse, tired all the time, but cant sleep, I am a firefighter in south florida, the heat makes it worse, and I am afraid that if I get on a big call that something may happen to me, any advice would help ? am I missing something ?? are the doctors missing something ?? thank you, mike

I can tell you that I am in the cardiology world career wise however I am familar with a rapid heart rate personally.  I have a history of atrial septal defect repair and supraventricular tachycardia.  The supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) is a rapid heart rate that comes from the top chambers or your heart.  It can be caused by stress, change of position, or by something more specific.  I had what the electrophysiologist calls  AV node reentry tachycardia or some people have what they call an extra electrical pathway in the heart.  Beta blockers did not help me I was up to 150mg of Toprol (beta blockers) a day and I was always tired and I gained 35 pounds in 3 1/2 months.  If your heart rate is that high with a beta blocker just walking around you need to do something further, like see an electrophysiologist.  An EP doctor is another type of heart specialist who just studies the electrical portion of the heart ie. heart rates and rhythms.  I mean talk to your regular cardiologist.  You can not walk around with a heart rate of 150bpm.  That should be your exercising pulse rate.  Good luck to you!!! I hope this helps you.
