SVT

I just got the results of my Holter back--MD said I had two short runs of SVT( If I did I never noticed them).  Now he wants me to see a cardiologist--I am freaking out!! I have also been dealing with anxiety lately--can that cause the SVT?? Can SVT go away on its own??? Thanks!

Hello-  PAC's are are a type of premature heart beat or irregular heart beat or arrhythmia which start in the upper two chambers of the heart, or atria. These aren't serious, and they frequently go away on their own. It is not SVT, although a PAC can initiate SVT.

Types of SVTs
Supraventricular tachycardia is a general term that describes a number of different arrhythmias of the heart, each with a different mechanism of impulse maintenance.

The SVTs can be separated into two groups, based on whether they involve the AV node for impulse maintenance or not. Those that involve the AV node can be terminated by maneuvers that decrease conduction through the AV node, whereas those that do not involve the AV node may be unmasked by the transient AV block caused by the decreased conduction through the AV node.

SVTs from a SINOATRIAL source:

Sinus Tachycardia
Inappropriate sinus tachycardia
Sinoatrial node reentrant tachycardia (SANRT)
SVTs from an ATRIAL source:

(Unifocal) Atrial tachycardia (AT)
Multifocal atrial tachycardia (MAT)
Atrial Fibrillation with a rapid ventricular response
Atrial Flutter with a rapid ventricular response
SVTs from an ATRIOVENTRICULAR source:

AV nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT)
AV reentrant tachycardia (AVRT)
Junctional tachycardia
Permanent junctional reciprocating tachycardia (PJRT)

There really is no answer as to why some people have prolonged runs of SVT.

I hope this helps you better understand.

Take a breath :) You're alright :) Svt is very common and not life threatning, just annoying, you're lucky you didnt feel it!!

Anxiety can trigger SVT, but its not the cause.. Depending on what type of SVT you have, the cause can vary, but it usually involves having an extra electrical pathway in your heart ( you where probably born with this)

Svt can stop on its own, but the pathway that allows SVT to happen "go away" without ablation.. If you have svt, unless you get that extra pathway "ablated", you will always have it, however how often its triggered can be controlled with medication.. Dependong what kind of svt you have, ablations are up to 98% successful in curing SVT.

Wow! You're so lucky not to feel it, how is it possible to NOT feel an episode of svt? How long did this episode last?

Collegegirl: Hope you can answer some qs for me: Why is it some people only have short episodes of svt and some have long episodes? Is it true that not all svts are caused by an extra pathway? Also what are supraventricular ectopics are they PACS? If someone gets a run of about 6-7 supraventricular ectopics is it an svt?

The only thing I noticed were the very annoying PAC/PVC's which is why I was wearing the monitor.  Maybe that was the svt??? It felt more like skipped beats as opposed to a rapid heart beat(if that makes sense)

thats what i was thinking. It may be that you got a row of PACs and i'm not sure but perhaps a row of pacs is called an svt too?? Have you had pacs and pvcs confirmed?
I get SVT attacks too but mine are a rapid heart beat at about 200bpm and it can last from about 5-30 mins sometimes longer.

Hey :)  Whew, not feeling SVT, I can't imagine.  I guess with a very short run that would be possible.  Mine usually occurs at high heart rates (over 150) which typically means I am exercising pretty hard and my heart is beating hard so when it takes off into SVT I feel every unsettling rattle as it goes.

I was diagnosed with SVT at 16, and I'm now 28.  I've been through two pregnancies with it and until after the birth of my second I pretty much never had any major episodes to speak of.  It's become more of a problem recently, but I'm still managing it without medications.

Don't freak out ;)  You'll be okay.

Thanks! On the day I wore the Holter I was driving home from work and I live in NY and it was snowing and I did a 180 and slid off the road and almost hit a telephone pole!  I did feel a rush of adreline--so I am wondering if that episode cooresponds with the svt episode on the monitor.

Thanks for the information. Can you tel me what a supraventricular ectopic is? is it the same as a pac?

By the way how are things with you at the moment? I know you had no success with the ablations for svt and had an episode of afib. I think you said you went to see a new doc who wasn't sure if you even had svt. I was just wondering if things have progressed for you?

A PAC can be considered a supraventricular ectopic.

As for how things are going with me...I have been better. I am going into the Brigham&Woman's
hospital in Boston 2 weeks from tomorrow for my 3rd EP Study/Ablation. My date was bumped up since my last EKG that showed
left atrial enlargement due to prolonged tachycardia.  The Dr has said that he will do his best to cure me but said that I may end up with a pacer/defibrilator because of the multiple ahrrythmias that are involved.   I am trying to remain optimistic with the hopes that the 3rd time should be the charm! Isn't that what they say? In the mean time I keep my fingers crossed to have this nightmare behind me soon:)

Thanks for asking.

hey
i just recently had an operation to aid in the cure of SVT.
my attacks became more and more frequent on a day to day basis. i started to have atleast three a day and my heart rate was measured at 270bmp for 11 minuets thats right 270bpm. it hurt alot. when my cardiologist frist operated he was able to irradicate 80% of the problem but i continued to have the attacks. when i had my second procedure he found that there was another pathway that was causing the main palpatations.
now it feels really wierd to have a normal heart rate again.
is it really common to have two extra pathways?
