You are misunderstanding me. Your suggestion is that since alcoholism is an evil of sorts, then we cannot say anything about it that may be commendable. The subject never had to do with whether the report was true or not, but what seemed to upset you was saying something good about something that may be bad. And how can you say that the statement is irresponsible when you have not investigated the source of it? Opinions are great; but research is better.

Are you saying it is the truth? The tabloids mentioned no trial data or anything. Alcohol abuse may not cause heart disease, but it is linked to heart failure and cancer as well as many other major organ problems.
Of course truth is no irresponsible, nobody has said it isn't but can we believe everything we read, and take it as truth? If a newspaper said the grass is blue and the sky is green, should we believe it?

How can truth, presuming this is truth, be irresponsible? Truth is truth, and the single most important factor in intellectual growth.

Just recently the front pages of newspapers in the UK said "drinking lots of alcohol could save you from heart attacks, studies show heart disease is virtually non existant in alcoholics". What kind of statement is that to make, how irresponsible. I bet thousands of people are getting drunk every day to save their hearts, but destroying their brains, liver and kidneys.

At first the large heart institutions such as the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association ignored both antioxidants and frowned upon wine. While it is clear that it could be potentially dangerous for a physician to recommend his patients start drinking alcohol, it is also strange that they pretended for so many years to ignore the evidence. Well, now even if they don't promote the taking of vitamin pills; antioxidants and free radicals are now recognized. However, according to the AHA "There is no scientific proof that drinking wine or any other alcoholic beverage can replace conventional measures. No direct comparison trials have been done to determine the specific effect of wine or other alcohol on the risk of developing heart disease or stroke. Just ask yourself who would pay for such studies. Clinical Trials have the purpose of showing one thing to be better than another, or whether a certain substance is beneficial to health. The costs of clinical trials is so high that only the pharmaceutical industry have the financial clout to invest in them - invest is the correct word. What a surprise!.

and according to the french, wine is good for you. Apparently it's why they can eat such a fatty diet and get away with it.

I battle this also. Had a quintuple in 07 at age 49. BP is puzzling at times. I eat very heart healthy, low sodium, and take Metoprolol. It does not go as high as yours, but sometimes hits 150/93, or around 135/88 - which is always alarming to me.

Two things I have noticed that keep it in a good range (120/80) are regular exercise and low alcohol intake. I have a tendency at time to watch a Friday evening movie with a few glasses of wine - the next day my BP is always up. A daily brisk walk of 45 to 60 min. seems to do the best.

In as many as 95% of reported high blood pressure cases in the United States, the underlying cause cannot be determined. This type of high blood pressure is called essential hypertension.

Statistics show that high bp tends to run in families, and is greatly influenced by diet  and lifestye. Who Is More Likely to Develop High Blood Pressure? People with family members who have high blood pressure, smoke, overweight, not active, alcohol to excess, and people who eat too many fatty foods or foods with too much salt...reduce your blood pressure risk and medication.
