Is having palpitation for no reason a common thing?

Hello,
I'm 19 years old and i've been suffering from palpitation from August 2008. After consulting the Dr i found out that i had hyperthyroidism. I took PTU for 5 months and the TSH, T4 and T3 levels were back to normal.

Now after stoping the treatment, i still have very fast heart beats even though everything is normal, and now I'm taking Inderal and Procoralan, and the Cardiologist told me after having an echocardiography that there is no specific reason that causes the fast pulse, so is that common? and will i have to take those medications forever?

Noting that i sometimes feel uncomfortable as if my heart isn't beating effortlessly, and have slight chest pain.

Thank You

I'm taking this under concideration, and hopefully going to have that test soon. But i just wanted to ask, are there any obvious signs or symptoms of having low magnesium levels that I should be aware of?

dont mean to scare you , but my son in law had 2 heart attacks in his early 20s cause was low magnesium, emergency dept fobbed him off didnt believe he was in cardiac arrest, had to make a scene to be taken seriously and had another while in there, he is 35 now and okay just takes care of himself

just take good healthy care of yourself

Opie,

I've been aware of all the side effects of this drug, but i thought that you might have a clue. Thanks a lot for all the information you've provided for me. I think that ill have further more tests to check my condition.

Layla,

I do not know.  If you run a google or any web search on that drug, you will find a huge amount of information about bad side effects, birth defects and lawsuits.  It does not look like a good drug.

yes I'm trying my best to cut those out.
Im not having any other medications right now, though i took Roaccutane for 8 monthes 2 years ago. Is it possible that it caused the palpitation?

Something else came to mind.  Stay away from caffeine.  No coffee, tea, or softdrinks.

The two meds that you are taking are a beta blocker and a heart beat reducer, so your treatment would seem logical.  You must be taking something else -- maybe a tetracycline or something for your skin?  I think you should make sure your doctor knows everything you are using, even vitamins and supplements.  120 beats/minute is quite fast and is equivilent to someone running or cycling.  Vision flashes is one of the side effects of Procoralan.

Good luck with your health.

Thank you both a lot for your responses, i think that ill have to concider the magnesium levels and have that checked.

Well, im under Inderal 10mg, and Procoralan 7.5mg both twice a day and that is all I take. I get palpitations almost all the time, especially after i wake up from my naps, where i usually feel uncomfprtable from it. Without medications my heart rate usually reaches 120 b/min or more. My health is generally good, i just feel lazy sometimes and get heart twitches,  shallow breath and sometimes i loose my concentration or see flashes when i blink.

Thanks

Layla,

You did not tell how fast your heart is beating and why you think it is a problem.  Does it happen all the time?  Is it mostly when you are at rest or lying down?  Do you keep a journal or diary of the events and what may be causing them?  How is the rest of your health and what meds are you taking?

One reason for palpitations is low levels of magnesium. I would have a hair sample analysis and treat that if magnesium is low. Your body does not have a drug deficiency.
