Hand soreness at night

For the past several months, my husband is awakened in the middle of the night with very achy or sore hands (opposite side of his palm).  He immediately starts to masage them and it helps somewhat, but the discomfort is enough that it awakens him from a dead sleep.  This happens a couple of nights a week, sometimes just one hand and sometimes both hands.  Do you know what may be causing this?

Thanks for your feedback.  Although he keeps busy around the house, e.g., fixing things, yard work, etc. his regular job is in security which doesn't require any extreme physical work.  He's been in this line of work over 20 years.

It doesn't sound like a cardiac symptom, but does sound like a vascular issue.  I had symptoms like that as a young man working as a commercial fisherman (long hours, extreme fatigue, cold weather, etc.  Does he work hard physically using his hands?
