Hi, in usual uses, Ranexa is used as a booster to already administered medication to help chronic angina. So, when a patient is taking all the usual medication, such as , ace inhibitors, beta blockers, statins and the like, this is added to help improve blood flow even more and hopefully reduce the symptoms.
I always learn so much from reading your posts. What exactly is Ranexa and its uses?
A redo CABG is always more risky than the first. I am assuming they used arteries from her chest to use as grafts, and the remainder where veins from her leg? It is not uncommon for veins to close up, but the arteries are probably still fine and are usually put into the most important places during bypass surgery. My bypass failed after three months, just the veins, and it was decided by several cardiologists that a redo would not be wise because I'm one of those individuals that doesn't respond well with veins. There was also a fair amount of plaque lining the artery needing a redo, which meant there was no ideal spot to graft onto.
There are four main options open.
1. Try and control the situation with medication.
2. Try and revascularise the native coronary arteries using angioplasty, i.e. stenting.
3. Try another bypass.
4. Transplant.
I was in a very similar situation and was recommended to go onto a transplant list. I refused and spent two years searching out cardiologists who were a bit pioneering in angioplasty, the real experts. I finally found one in Imperial College London, who trained Cardiologists not just here in the UK but all over the World. He took one look at my Angiogram and said no problem. Cardiologists who were his students up to 10 years ago attended the procedure because they believed it impossible.
It all depends on how much the blocked bypass conduits are affecting your Mother and the condition of her heart. If they feel that something needs to be done to supply more blood, I would ask them to involve someone with a lot of experience, around 30 years of it. Training hospitals, facilities usually have the best.
I assume due to the use of Ranexa your Mother has quite strong angina symptoms?
has she deteriorated in any way? like become weaker than before? to know for sure ask your doc go through what would happen if she didn't have surgery
