I thought you had developed a very bad stutter.
In essence it's a sonar application to obtain a picture of an item similar to an x-ray. A nurse will put some goop on your chest and rub a small gizmo around the chest. This is hooked up to a computer sitting next to you displaying the live picture where the nurse can watch the heart in action and make measurements. I don't know if it's also called an echo or something else when you go to the Dr and they run this gun around your belly to take pictures of the infant inside the womb.... Identical situation and equipment.
Ed, you forgot the echo...

An echocardiogram uses the same machine Doctors use to see a baby developing in the womb and listening to the babys heart beat. You basically lay on your side and the Doctor runs a small hand held probe overy your chest, using gel, and this gives images on the monitor. It allows many things to be checked and is a great tool for investigating heart problems. It will show the dimensions of your heart, including the internal chamber volumes. It will show how well your valves are working, if there are any leaks and probably most important, it will show if your heart muscle is contracting, relaxing uniformly. There is no discomfort from this procedure apart from the cold gel being applied to the skin.
