I did take the PCN, but I did not have an infection, so you are in a different situation. I do not like taking any meds because of my heart, so I understand your concern. Because I was a new patient with a history of heart arrythmia, they called for my echo report which showed trace regurgitation. That is why they had me take it. What's funny is, neither my cardio or family doc let me know I even had trace regurg. They told me later I was at no more risk of getting a heart infection from teeth cleaning than the general population. Amoxil does not give me any problems, and I just got off of it last week for strep throat. I'm assuming you've never taken Amoxil? If I were you, I would call my cardiologist, or family doctor if you don't have a cardio, and tell them what the dentist is wanting to give you and let them know of your infection. Doctors and dentist do work together and should in these cases. I agree with bbxx in that gum infections can be very problematic for the heart....even for healthy hearts that don't have any problems.
Peridontal infection can go straight to your heart. This is why the meds prior to cleaning your teeth. IN my opinion you are playing a dangerous game by not taking the antibiotic for your infection. Look it up--- gum infections and the heart.
Did you end up taking the 2000mg of pcn? Were you scared of a lethal arrythmia, because I surely am. My mom thinks taking this much is crazy and that I am playing with my life. I need to get rid of this peridontal infection but am just so scared to take such a high dosage at one time. The dentist is a peridontal specialists and says that it is ama standards. My body is different and I did not come out of a cookie cutter. Though everyone here reports no problems with amoxicillin we are all different. My doc says it is the safest antibiotic for me because it does not prolong the Q-t interval.
Macrodantin causes arrythmias for me which is for uti's. I too have never had a problem with amoxicillian.
Thanks to our wonderful American Insurance system, I had to leave my dentist of 20 years and the new one gave me 2000 mg of PCN before they would even clean my teeth! Thank goodness my old dentist took me back!
I dont know how much they usually prescribe, but I have always taken amoxicillian and had no problems with my heart.
Thank you for your responses, they are greatly appreciated. I just had my exam today at the periodontist. She prescribed me amoxicillin, in one does totalling 2000 mg. I am very concerned about this. Last time I went to the dentist they gave me antibiotics over 2 weeks. She wants to give 4 500mg pills taken at once and hour before my procedure. Not only am I afraid of the dosage, but endocarditis. Is this normal to take this much at once? Now I do fear this will mess with my heart.
There are some antibitotics that effect your rythm, like cipro (for UTIs). You need to weight the risks and benefits. I personally have not had any issues with amoxicillin.
Ask your pharmacist if Amoxicillin interacts with any other meds you are taking. I personally have not had a problem with the antibiotic itself.
The most important thing is to ask your dentist for a painkiller without epinephrine. It can cause a rapid heartbeat and bring on an Afib episode. I am taking Norpace for Afib and it cannot be taken with Ethromycin, (or according to my pharmacist, any of the "mycins,") or Biaxin according to one of the messages on this board. This is very important as a life-threatening arrythymia can occur. This was in the fine print when I got the medication, but no one ever mentioned it to me. It also ok to have your teeth cleaned while on Coumadin, something I had been worried about.
