I should also add, I'm only 21 years old, in the military, and workout regularly.
I had the holter monitor on for 24 hours.
need more info I think. What time did the holter say you had a 5 second pause? would you have been awake at the time? IF you would have been awake, I think you would have noticed it. usually 3-5 seconds or 5+ will produce a dizzy sensation or >5 you will pass out.
So if you would have been awake at the time but don't recall the vent, the holter possibly read it wrong?
so anways, no I don't think a 5 second pause is normal. It sorta crosses the line into producing symptoms. It could be that they don't affect you at all and it's benign.
The 5 seccond pause was at around 5:30 in the morning right when I woke up and I did notice the pause.
There's a button you can push on the monitor to key if you're feeling symptoms which I did at that time.
I didnt pass out or anything but felt extremely out of breath, like I couldnt catch my breath. Was pretty scary.
Do you know if the 5s pause was followed by an escape beat? If so, was it junctional or ectopic?
I would keep asking questions and stay on top of it with your cardiologist just to be sure.
I think what you're going to hear is that "in a structurally normal heart...." this is normal and benign.
You are young and you are conditioned.
The heart's electrical system is far from perfect for anyone, fortunately nature built in a lot of redundancy.
I think for myself, I've had episodes of pauses. I never caught it on an EKG (though I've caught all sorts of other wacky and fun stuff!). When I would first start to fall asleep I'd suddenly wake up breathless. On the worst nights this would happen 3 or 4 times. The episodes would last a few nights then go away for a while, only to creep up on me many months later. I'm still here and still in top shape. :-)
Thanks for all your input! I really appreciate it :)
