Stronger beat once a day

Hello,

I’m a 28 yo male, lean, eating healthy, low BMI, about 19, trying to gain some muscle (10-12lb in all). I’m working out with 3 days cardio, 1hr swimming pool, and 3 days light weightlifting weekly (30 min 15lb dumbbells + 20 min abs), just started lifting in fact, 3 months only. I’ve been swimming for almost 2 years now so my heart rate went down from 60 to 45 and I read it’s an indicator of a strong healthy heart. About three years ago I started feeling once in a while a stronger heart beat and after seeking medical advice I was diagnosed with a light Mitral VP (3mm), nothing serious doctors said, treadmill showed nothing, I was advised however to avoid heavy weightlifting. Now in the last 6 months I have this singular stronger heartbeat more often, one but almost every day. It causes me some anxiety, actually, it doesn’t depend on what I’m doing, morning/evening, at rest or during exercise. I don’t fill like it was triggered by my weightlifting sessions because it started prior to them but could it be that my MVP is getting worse and have to cut on my exercising? If that may help, I changed country&job about 7 months ago, so maybe it’s a post-stress reaction?

Thank you for this wonderful opportunity to get a fast medical opinion.

Thank you Zach, I am still looking for a decent doctor in the area but in the meantime I wanted to know what is happening to me.
My only stimulants are ginseng supplement and a multivitamin. No alcohol, much water and yes I take protein, about 1g per 2 pounds bodyweight, that is 2 time lower than most bodybuiling sites advise. I would never think protein may cause anything to the heart. I think stress is more to blame.
Thank you again!

Well, I'm not sure it will be a fast "medical" opinion. I'm not a qualified doctor by any means, but I do have a few suggestions about what you may be experiencing.

Are you taking any stimulants? If so, reduce them.

Are you staying hydrated?

How often do you drink alcohol?

Are you taking supplements for weight gain? Like large amounts of Protein?

There are many factors that can cause the PVC, which I'm guessing you are experiencing. PVC = Premature Ventricular Contraction.  This is where either the left or right ventrical will beat too quickly, and on the next beat it will be compensating and stronger because there is more blood to eject. This is benign condition to have, and is quite ironically more common in athletes.  Some of us feel them and worry. Some of us feel them and don't worry, Some of us don't feel them.

I'm not qualified to answer about your MVP, but If you were given a clean bill of heart health, and you have regular check-ups. I don't see MVP being a grave concern.

Stress, Depression and Anxiety can trigger these annoying strong beats as well.  I have suffered with them almost daily for 13 years. I'm do not exercise like I should be, but I am an active person.

Hope this helps..

Zach
