Hello Thank you for yur reply.
I did not quit cold turkey. I take 25 mg of atenlol in the morning and I used to take 25mg at night, Well I decided the nightly one I would wean myself off of and cut it in half, take it and take the 500 mg of magnesium.
So for 2 weeks I took my morning 25mg of atenelol then the nightly one I cut in half took it and took magnesium as well. Well after 2 weeks of this routine I had ponding haert along with Tachy about 135 bpm 3 times in one week.
I know if you quit cold turkey any med is not good I was weaning myself off slowly. Would that still cause a rebound effect. for such a dose? I assumed it was the Magnesium. No the magnesium was not doctor prescribed.
Most doctors dont believe vitamins as healers. They push on the drugs. So I didnt even talk to my cardiologist about it. Most doctors will lose patients if we treated ourselves with vitamins and pharmascutical companies would lose too.
But anyway, I dont know what cause the consecutive 3 days in a row tachy. I stopped the magnesium and went back to 2 atenelols a day. I guess I will be on this the rest of my life.
I'm very confused by your chain of events. YOur first post lead me to beleive that your doctor presecribed Mg and the Atenlol together. In your second post you seem to be saying that you've been on the atenolol for some time but then added Mg Ox in an attempt to wean yourself off the Atenelol? You mentioned you put yourself back to your regular dose Atenelol.
Do I have this correct?
If that's the case, you can't just quit a beta blocker like Atenolol cold turkey like this. Mg Ox isnt going to be a substitute for Atenlol. Your body has made adjustments to the precense of the medicaton depending on how long you've been on it. When the medication isn't in your system you will have a "rebound" effect. In other words the original problem will come back much worse that it was pre-medcation days.
If I have this scenario correct quitting the BB is what cuased your SVT to come back. The Mg Ox had nothing to do with it.
If you were trying to quit the BB you are going to have rebound tach. You just can't quit a BB by substituting Mg Ox. It won't work.
Hello thanks for your post. But the magnesium made me have the worst SVT attacks 3 in one week. I read all this great information how magnesium is great and good for heart rythm disorders. But within 2 weeks thats how long I took it. It was horrific. Never will I touch the magnesium again. It would make my heartrate at 49 then shoot all the way to 122. then 3 times in one week freaked me out. I discontinued and will never Dr myself. I should have talked to my Dr. But I thought I could do it myself. I'm back on atenlol 2x's a day. I just wanted to wean myself off of prescription drugs. But I dont think that will be the case. But again thank you.
here is a web site listing drug interactions
- http://www.drugs.com/drug-interactions/magnesium-oxide.html -
Magnesium oxide isn't the best source for magnesium....citrate, gluconate, chloride, are better.... oxide is usually used as a laxative. ask your pharmacist what is the cheapest best form to take...mine gave me slow magnesium with calcium.
