Hi, everyone. I've had PVCs for most of my adult life. Normally, they just came randomly, but I never had any major problems with them. About 14 years ago, I chose to go on a low-dose beta blocker so that I didn't feel so much anxiety. I do have a history of anxiety and panic attacks, so keeping the PVCs and sinus tachycardia at bay is important to me.
Recently, I had noticed a little bit more PVCs, so I had a 24-hour monitor done. I was shocked to find that I only had 15 during that 24 hours as my last holter monitor years ago showed about 700. I also had an echocardiogram because I have mild mitral valve prolapse, and that was all that it showed as well. Everything else was normal heart function.
About a week after my echocardiogram, which was this past Friday night, I came home and noticed that I was having a few more PVCs than normal. I walked into my bedroom and sat down, and of course got anxious about it, and my heart rate shot up. During the high heart rate, which was probably in the 120s at the time, I started having tons of PVCs one right after the other. This had never happened to me before.
I ended up asking my husband to call the ambulance and had to be taken to the emergency room. All the way there, my heart rate was in the 120s and I was having PVCs all over the place. My blood pressure was 170/110, and I normally have a low blood pressure of about 100 over 60 so this was quite frightening for me.
I ended up spending seven hours in the emergency room hooked up to a monitor. For the first time, I went into bigeminy. This would last for several minutes at a time, and I was having lots of PVCs even when I wasn't bigeminy. They gave me Ativan which did nothing and also two doses of 5 mg Lopressor which did little. Finally, they gave me a 25 mg pill of Lopressor and decided to send me home even though I was still having lots of PVCs. I wanted to stay, but the doctor told me that it wasn't a dangerous rhythm and it was basically just an annoyance I would have to live with.
My biggest concern is why did this happen out of the blue? Of course, I went back to my cardiologist on Monday and he doesn't seem overly concerned either. He said that if this happened over the course of many years, it could cause problems with my heart. For now, he wants me on 75 mg of Lopressor a day for a week and then to back it down to 50 mg.
The day after I got out of the hospital, I had lots of PVCs. The next day wasn't so bad at all, but it comes and goes now. I feel anxious and I'm not sure how long the Lopressor takes to really get into your system and work. Before that, I have been on Zebeta for 14 years and that had usually kept my palpitations and anxiety at bay.
Could I still be having the PVCs because the Lopressor hasn't built up in my system enough yet? It's only been four days.
Any idea why I would suddenly have such a terrible bout of PVCs out of the blue when I've not had nearly that large number in all these years?
