heart

I have paroxysmal atrial fibrillation with biatrial enlargement as noted on echocardiogram possibly related to diastolic relaxation abnormality.  Everything else is normal.  Blood pressure 106/58.  Pulse 62. I have a CHADS score of 1 and low dose aspirin has been recommended.

How serious is the afib, enlargement and relaxation abnormality?  Anything I can or should do about it?

Yes, Jerry - this originally showed up on the "Birds" forum here on MedHelp. There are many animal/pet forums available. Not sure why it started out there but I'm glad it was shifted here.

Thanks "ireneo"... but must admit I'm not at all sure what the "birds" forum is... on Medhelp?

"jere.."  your reported facts suggest you are in better shape than many of us.  I am a little surprised you are getting away with a simple aspirin, but if that's your doctor's prescription, great, much easier to deal with than is coumadin/warfarin.  Occasional AFib is much better than permanent AFib, which I have, and at your age (79 shown in your profile) you are really pretty lucky. AFib is a common arrhythmia aliment among those over 60, and worse for each additional year.  My AFib started when I was in my late 50s.

The enlarged atrium may be the root cause of the AFib, but if the size is stable, not growing, I'd expect you can just live with it, in fact I don't believe there is anything that can be done to shrink it.  I have an enlarged left atrium, caused by a leaky mitral valve, which has been repaired...so we hope the size is now stable.

This is accidentally posted on the "birds" forum. You'd get better answers on the heart arrhythmia forum.

As for your PAF, did they give you atrial measurements?  That would give you a better idea of how severe the problem. Like having a murmur, there are several different grades of murmur - some benign, others more serious.

Your BP and pulse are excellent. The PAF must be minimal (although I'm sure it doesn't feel that way to you) if they're managing it with baby aspirin and not coumadin.

I have multiple arrhythmia problems but life is still excellent. For the more specific question of "how bad is it", that's something your cardio should explain clearly to you. Don't be afraid to ask him/her.

(I'm going to bump this on over to the right forum where you'll get more input.)
