Hello my name is Jason. I'm 28 yrs old. My question is. I've been having a strange problem with an irregular heart beat. It seems worse when I'm laying down.
My heartbeat seems to speed up and sometimes it's so rapid that it feels like it's going to beat out of my chest. Any time it does this for some reason I can't move. My whole body just goes numb. I am still awake and alert but I can't lift my arms or move at all. It only lasts about 5 seconds or so then it goes away. It never happens during the day when I'm up and doing things. I only get little flutters during the day but at night I have more problems with it. Do you have any Idea what is causing this? Thanks.

I just read about sleep paralysis on google and from the description it looks like that's the problem I'm having. I guess it might not be heart related after all. I never knew about that condition. Thanks for your help. I learned something new today. Much appreciated.

Hmm, Sleep paralysis. I suppose that might be possibly what's going on cause it always seems to happen when I'm laying down trying to sleep. I never get the rapid heart beat unless I'm laying down which is weird.  I've never heard of sleep paralysis before but that has me curious. I'll go check it out on google. Thanks for the advice.

Hi, Jason!  I have never experienced that sensation myself (of not being able to move during an arrhythmia).  Are you sure you are awake while this is happening?  Have you looked into something called "sleep paralysis?"  I have experienced times when I am falling asleep or waking up and I can't move my body at all, even though I want to.  But this hasn't occurred with an arrhythmia at all.  I think you should go to your doctor and get evaluated.  It's the best and safest way to go.

In the meantime, google "sleep paralysis" and see if you recognize the symptoms.  From what I've read, it can accompany a rapid heart rate.  But go to your doctor, too!!

Is it normal for something like this to cause me not to be able to move? I've told other people about this and they've never heard of not being able to move. Is it because of poor circulation? It's not painfull but it is worrying me a little.

Sounds like you need a monitor to figure out what your rhythm is when you are feeling this way.  I would suggest you go to a cardiologist and describe the feeling, etc... and ask if you should have an event monitor or holter monitor to try and "catch" what rhythm you are in when you feel the palpitations.  Good Luck.
