motrin and cardiac arrhythmias

by sacks5, Dec 05, 2008 09:44AM
I am a healthy 57 y/o male. I exercise regularly. My back is chronically sore from my profession(dentist). I take 800mg tabs of Motrin as needed. I have noticed over the last few years that I have been getting atrial heart palpitations at certain times. They occur 2 to 3 times per year. I have been to a cardiologist and have had an echo stress test done that I passed with flying colors. The cardiologist told me to come back when I am having an episode. The last episode was last night at 11 pm. His office was closed! The pounding in my chest was very annoying. I took a Valium and fell asleep. When I woke up it was a little better but still there. The previous day I had taken Motrin 800mg. As I stated before, I have been tracking my episodes with my Motrin consumption. Is there any relationship between arrhythmias and Motrin or should I investigate other causes to my problem?

Hi im not sure about motrin but can tell you that for a while i was taking tylonolpms to sleep but they caused heart arythmias and a friend here told me to stop taking them as i dident know they were the cause and from the time i stoped useing them the heart arythmias stoped so im not saying the moltrin is the cause but yes that could be the cause but you should see your cardiologist to rule out another cause.

Are you any beta blockers for the Afibs?  Is so, my pharmacist told me you shouldn't take Motrin while taking them.

I don't know if Motrin causes them though. Interesting thought, because recently I had been taking 600 mg daily for a sore hip and my Afibs had increased. So maybe there is a connection.

Do you have to take a 600mg pill?  I take the 200mg (over the counter) and only take another if absolutely necessary. I have heard it is hard on your kidneys and cause cause stomach problems (bleeding)
