pace maker

My Mom had a pacemaker put in late Dec 2010, went for testing to make sure it was working correctly a couple of weeks ago.  Now the pacemaker person called and said she was going to give her some medication  for hare heart rhythm...not sure what that means and Mom was sure why either since it was over the phone. She has had a couple of spells since it was put in where she had a very funny feeling and felt like she could pass out, ER Dr told her she had a "classic headache" this was after a short pain in temple area, speech slur and not being able to see very good.  Is this something to be concered about?

I assume the heart rhythm medications are because her heart is normally pacing itself, that is the pacemaker comes into action only if the heart rate is too low.  Then it is possible that the normal pace has some irregular characteristics that the medication is intended to help.

I believe you took the correct action to discuss with the doctor prescribing the pacemaker and on being checked in the ER.

From the little you have told us. I will guess that she needs more attention by the pacemaker support organization to be sure it is operating at the needed points.  This may correct the problems you describe.

Thank you, I appreciate your response  She is a little anxious which is not her nature she always been able to overcome about anything and this has her worried, she is 85 yrs so guess that will have something to do with it.

Did she have these spells before being put on medication for her arrhythmia's?  If these started after the meds, it may be a side effect.

Vision problems, slurred speech, dizziness and headache can all be signs of something small or something serious. Please call her regular cardiologist outside the ER if she has one.
