Any Suggestions?

Hey All.

Here's my question, as most of you know I just finished TX.  I was never a health nut, prior to TX and I doubt I will change now.  Let me clarify, I have never taken vitamins, and I really do not watch what I eat.  Excercise is cleaning and cooking...and taking Mojo for short walks.  Ok so here is my questions, without taking lots of supplements, any suggestions on what is good to take to perhaps just get my body back to normal, and start to feel like myself.

The only thing my doc suggested was a multi vitamin, and fish oil....Any thoughts!!!

Oh yea and I guess i have to quit smoking and ideas on that???

thanks!!!

peace'

Fish oil is good for heart,   centrum silver for viatamin? I rarely take supplement vitamins, they totally upset my stomach, But I know lots of heppers do take centrum silver no iron.

The short walks with the pooch are a good way to build up also,

smoking I don't know, i ahve always quite cold turkey, or a piece or two of nicotine gum.

I have read some good suggestions on here.

paci cara!

Glad you brought that up tomorrow I take my last riba and my body doesn´t feel good at all I have hardely any muscles left and I really need to come in shape after this tx.

I have done a reflection after reading peoples comment after finishing tx the ones who stays couch potatoes seems to not feel well after a year or even longer.

But on the otherhand the ones who make an effort to really get in shape seems to feel so much better people like mremeet who filled his backbag with bricks and  walked and walked and walked.
It also seems like the tx is changing  our metabolism so many gain weight after tx and all on the wrong places.
read mremeets story about that its in a thread somewhere.

My adwise is take it slow but do it take three days a week and walk start with half an our
and make it longer and longer but try to feel the joy in doing  it  don´t overdo it .

You are 10 years younger then me girl but neither of us is getting any younger let us take this 48 weeks of weaknes as a motivation to get stronger then ever before tx.

I started walking as soon as I could do it without a) gasping for air from the anemia, and b) taking a port-a-potty along because of the riba runs.  I started short walks at a leisurely pace and worked up both duration and speed.  It has helped a lot.  My doctor did EOT bloodwork and recommended some vitamin supplements, mostly D and B complex, and I try to take those with a good multi-vitamin but I must confess I often forget to take them.  Quitting smoking ~ that's a tough one.  I quit cold turkey on the last day of 1990 and I think that is the single best thing I ever did for myself (ok, divorcing my first husband is probably tied for best thing, but no matter.)  My PCP doctor agrees about quitting smoking being the best thing you can do, but he never met my ex!

Can someone shed some light for me on the whole Iron thing? One day I was talking to my tx nurse..I mentioned that I was not taking any vitamins or supplements because I was afraid to take anything while on TX. She said you can take vitamins, then I said ok but I should stay away from ones with iron..she told I can take them no problem.

I see in post more often then not that we should stay away from Iron. Can someone explain?

I've been walking, and working with kids keeps me going. Definitely watch the calorie intake. I've gained back 8 pounds at my 6 month post tx dr. visit. So I can't eat the high fat stuff like before. That was the only good thing about tx for me, the weight loss! =)
I don't smoke so can't help you there!
All the best!

You have gotten a lot of great advice here...the only thing that I would like to add is to boost your intake of vitamins...especially C...as it helps boost your immune system...B complex will help you bounce back from the anemia and look into some minerals as well...I added some zinc and selenium and still researching others...also ALA for cell regeneration

If I didn't have the flu right now...I bet I would feel almost normal again...

Thanks all the advice, i will try walking a bit at a time.

The articial on Fish Oil very informatative and seems that mercury content, if any,  is not enough to do any harm.

My primary had a good suggestion, she said "if you have never taken vitamins, I'd rather you wait a bit and drink lots of water, rest when needed, but start moving even if it is small walks...wait until everything is out of your system before taking anything even a vitamin, (upset stomach)...I think thaat advice may be good. kinda clean out my systems from everything......

She also said on about the smoking, she would love for me to quit, but if i had to take something like chantrix, to wait...again clean out my system.....plus she said that i really didnt need the withdrew from smoking just yet....She Said give your body sometime, to start to heal itself and then slowy make changes...such as excercise, vitamins, diet etc....

I thought that sound pretty good!

I did not take any vitamins during treatment because I did not want any extra of any thing in my system except what was prescribed but after 3 months off treatment I did start taking a half tab of Centrum Silver no iron everyother day any more than that was too much and still take it to this day.

Congrats! on finishing Treatment.

When you are ready...look into a liquid multi vitamin there are many on the market that you can pickup at most health food stores.

Liquid vitamins work quickly and you don't have to break pills into pieces and wonder how much you are getting. It's easy to pour in smaller doses and build up to the recomended dose.

Most will have a small amount  of iron...if your liver has only minimal damage, iron won't build up...nothing to worry about.

Look for the sugar content though...most people don't want a lot of sugar...they also have minerals.

Save the link I gave you...if you ever need to know what supplements give what benefits you can look it up right there.

GNC stores has a very gentle complete body cleanse to help rid your body of toxins...if you want to go that route...

Above all, rest...don't over do it...I hit the ground running when I went off the meds I thought that I could push myself no mater what....cause I was going to get better anyway...Then ended up with bronchitis...

Good luck

Agrees with PMC  Vitamins make me so sick to my stomach, I have never been able to take them,   Except vit c. which leaves your body very quickly,  if you do take them, check with a dietician  many vitamins cancel each other out.

No fish oil is ok.    mercury levels theory  has been dismissed.

Having a good diet, of healthy food is better than  taking vitamins.   Unless there is one your bidy won't produce.

What ever uyou decide to do feel better!

Love ya kiddo!

IF you have a place where you can swim, well for me that's the best thing.  Even when the anemia was at its worst I found swimming was something I could do to keep from being completely sedentary.  It helps that you're not fighting gravity.

How was Neil Young?  I'm so envious!

ditto JD, I miss swimming!   for me that and walking has always  helped.  Even know I make my self move, laying around just makes you feel weaker!  Takes a little time to feel yourself again.  To rebuild muscles,

You guys will eventually start to feel well again. I promise that. Even though I didn't believe it when it was me after my 72 weeks. I craved sugar - could have eaten it straight out of the sugar bowl it was SO bizarre but eventually that went away.

Treatment ***** - it's hard and there is no doubt about it. But it works. So it's worth the chance.

Give yourself some time and you will be fine.

I took vitamins and supplements (nothing however 'Chinese' or anything like that just regular old Centrum Silver and some extras that I threw in that wouldnt possibly cause any problems with the meds) it's best to make SURE whatever you take wont have ANY effect on the most important things - the treatment meds.  If you are not 100% positive it won't then don't do it.

Of course we are going to feel bad on treatment - think about what it's doing. it's  HUGE!

But it will go away in time. Hve faith and hang in there.
