Father And Son Accident

Being that this is a medical question, I need to find an answer. Perhaps someone here can solve this.

A father and son get into a bad car accident. Both end up with broken legs. The ambulance takes both to the city hospital. They wheel the boy into surgery first. The surgeon comes into the operating room and says, "I can't operate on this boy, he's my son".

How is this possible?

My daughter was asked this when she was about 6 and she got it right, but then, her pediatrician was a woman.
Happily, the younger generation knows that woman can do many many things.

Patra is right. We're all programmed to think all surgeons are males. In fact, the surgeon who did my liver transplant was...... a lady..
