Interferon and Depression

YES!   I am a firm believer and active caregiver for one who was given interferon for HCV and subsequently had  psychotic/depressive episodes (severe) for a 3 year period.  My spouse was diagnosed in 2002 with HCV.....prior to that was working, actively engaged in life....after attempting the HCV trmt  interferon with Ribaviran for less than 2 wks had a psychotic break and then was but on an antidepressant. He stayed on an antidepressant for approximately 4 years then attempted the peglayted interferon with Ribaviran for less than  2 wks and again had multiple anxiety issues.......he is now dealing with type2 diabetes, liver cirrhosis and Biolar 1 issues
Proceed with caution on medication.....it can be a help and a hinderance

Hi Wynn....very familiar with that poison, had depression and am Bi-polar 1 as well. It was devastating at best only lasted 5 wks had to stop. The depression and suicidal thoughts were almost successful.
Thank goodness for new treatments with shorter Tx times and less SFX .
Good Luck & Blessings to you both

My husband was treated with interferon and ribavirin several years ago and the side effects were horrible as you already know.  Unfortunately, it was un-successful.  He is now being treated with ribavirin and sovaldi. I understand this is a rather new treatment just approved by the FDA this year with minimal side effects compared to the previous treatments.   It's been 2 months and all is good.  Labs look good and it appears to be working.  Check with your doctor and see if this might be a viable treatment for your husband.  Good Luck and God Bless  ~ O

Hi I am sorry that happened to your husband, I have read of others having problems though not as quickly.
The good news is that medical community is using the new all oral when they can and they are reportedly easier to take and a much less amount of time.
Take Care
