Why are red shoes considered good luck?

I know when we played darts and pool that we would put "noonans" on people when we wanted them to miss, and I believe that is from the movie Caddyshack.  We also said "red shoes" for good luck (I still use these when watching football), but I have no idea where it comes from.

I notice a lot of red shoes around here, so I'm hoping someone can enlighten me :)

Jelise,

I have to admit that when I wore my red shoes in bed that night of my last injection, I wasn't exactly thinking SVR, or going out on the town, or anything much other than whew, tx is done and I made it to the end, hallelujah.

And I put on the shoes as a symbol of something important (didn't know exactly what) and then went to sleep.

If anything was on my mind when I admired my feet in those shoes, it was that I could start feeling human again, maybe even sexy again, and all with a bit of help from little red stilettos.

I can tell you it was really fun and channeled my mixed emotions into something tangible.

Some sources say red has a physiological effect shown to stimulate the adrenal glands, which helps increase our stamina.  I had so little energy that night but I swear the red shoes give me a lift despite hemoglobin in the nines.

Different colors have such different associations, depending on the culture.

In Chinese tradition, red is considered a symbol of integrity and that it can drive away misfortune. So yes, generally, good fortune and luck.

In North America, red is culturally associated with sexuality and love. Valentines are red because hearts are red; red dresses and shoes likewise are romantic and/or sexy.

There's an explanation of color psychology in several books, often in disagreement.

Anyone with an anthropology background remembers Desmond Morris's The Naked Ape. I don't think I'll repeat his lips, etc. thesis here because the guys might go nuts.  (To the gals only, Desmond Morris says painting the lips red represents a woman ready for sex because it signals her vagina lips are reddish and swollen! Hot dog!)

Anyway, women colored their nails red in ancient Egypt, and red has probably been part of cultural symbolism, one way or the other forever.

In South Africa, red is a sign of mourning, so go figure.

Anyway, if you try them, please let me know if you get that exciting feeling!

Susan

P.S. Not to complicate things but the Pope traditionally wears red slippers!

The red stilettos are what we put on and dance with every time someone reaches SVR... I can't remember exactly how it came about, but it has become a tradition.

It's one of those things which happen when a whole bunch of loony heppers get together on MH.

I just thought it was about feeling sexy!

It was fun.

Some of us went for red flip-flops, too.

I went for the stilettos, just that once in my life, so I'll always associate them with the end of my HCV treatment.

It was exciting to buy them and wear them. I was still too tired at the end of tx to go out with them, so I just wore them in bed.

JD started this with a couple of us girlfriends a long, long time ago it seems now. Whenever someone reaches SVR we get out the party shoes (must be stilleto's of course) and dance around in them.

Though this being cyber space you can go "purchase" a nice pair and dance and never really have left the house you realize.........it's more the idea (at least to me who doens't have $1,000 for a pair of Christian Louboutin's)........

And of course, Candoman insisted we put on red thongs too but that is a very rare occassion ;)

Ha ha.  I think I'll go get some red converse (so sexy), but no way on the thong.  I don't even like wearing regular underwear.  :)

I still wonder where it started out in the rest of the world though.  Like I said, my friends would say "red shoes" if they wanted someone to make a shot in pool - and that was almost 20 years ago.

Weird.

Maybe...possibly...influenced by Chinese custom.  The bride wears red shoes for good luck in some circles.  So perhaps it spread a bit.

I love my Red Flip Flops for celebrating our SVRs.

But I really like our chicken suits we put on when waiting for results, too.

Thong????  Not gonna happen....

Agree with all;  it wasn't too long ago that the Red Shoe/SVR syndrome started.

I was so over the moon to announce that I was making it to the Red Shoe Ball, that I haven't been able to change the comment.   And yeah, my red shoes are totally virtual... but when I get older, I'm gonna get some real ones.

Kristina, I actually bought these especially for my SVR. They are really high and pointy. Unfortunately they turned out to be a size to big. Yikes, so I could only dance with them at home. :-(

Aw, shucks!!!  Yes, Jan, I felt that!  Thanks, guys!  Its snowing here and if I wear my new sexy red shoes out to dinner they will get all wet, but they deserve a night out for New Year's Eve so maybe I'll just go for it.  Besides, they really make the outfit special!  So what do you say, sexy red heels or boring black boots?  I have an hour to decide.

Jelise wondered if the reason people here wear the red shoes for an SVR is the same reason lots of other people around the world consider red shoes good luck.  I really don't think they're wearing red shoes when they play darts and pool or put on red shoes for good luck when watching football because of something we did on this Hep C forum.  Nice thought but I think the Chinese but us to that custom eons ago. :)

Myself and OH's responses addressed why people in general might consider red shoes good luck.  Your reponses among others are why red shoes are worn here on SVR.  Both questions asked, both questions responded to.

If I ever reach SVR, can I put on hot pink flip-flops(thong sandals/beach shoes, or whatever you call them)???  I don't wear any heels, much less red stillettos, but somehow, I don't think anybody would mind because I think they'd be so happy that I'd finally reached SVR!!

Myself and OH's responses addressed why people in general might consider red shoes good luck. "

In general people wear black, blue, brown, blue and red shoes as a matter of whatever floats their boat. Point conceeded 100%.

We (on the hepC forum particularly) wear red shoes to say happy celebration of your SVR and it came from that specific thread listed above.

Now if someone wants to say that their reasoning is different than that particular thread then they certainly can feel free to copy the idea and make up stuff about Valentines day but it's not correct.

I'd think the people who actually made it up might know what they are talking about after all and it had nothing to do with psychobabble gobbledeegook - it had to do with going out in the snow on New Years and which to do look hot or be practical.  We've said it ever since and one time a long time back MH asked what it was all about and they were told the truth.

So in general if wearing red shoes makes your libido go up then go for it if you need to do it to feel sexy.  But in here it has always been related to "Happy SVR Party".

Oh man ... this is getting *painful*.

I don't know what you have in your bonnet yet again but you and I were answering different questions and that's all I was pointing out.  That Jelise was not misunderstanding the answer you went to great lengths and research to deliver.  That she was asking something else that you didn't quite catch, maybe because you were so focused on your particular angle.

Jelise asked why people in GENERAL wear red shoes for good luck and gave as an example her and her friends playing darts and wearing red shoes for good luck when watching football games and wondered if the people on this forum might have gotten their red shoe SVR choice from the same influence.

I'm not trying to change history or engaging in silly disputes over who started the red shoes trend on this forum.  In the big scheme of things, really not that high on my list, Deb.

She asked where people in general OUTSIDE of this forum may have gotten the notion that red shoes were good luck. I was intrigued by that question.  Very interesting question.  "Why DO people in general outside of this forum (there IS life outside of this forum) wear red shoes for good luck?" I asked myself.  So I went looking into that.  And lo and behold, I came across the fact that Chinese brides wear red shoes for good luck!! "Very interesting!" I said to myself.  "Maybe that spread and that's where it comes from!" I said to myself yet again.  So I decided to share that with Jelise.

I wasn't responding to YOU or who originated the red shoes for SVR trend on this forum. I never said a bloody thing about that until joking about Can-do's influence on it.  I was responding to Jelise's question about why people wear red shoes for good luck OUTSIDE of this forum and if it's the same reason people here wear red shoes.  No "psychobabble gobbledeegook" about that, no hidden agenda, no sinister intentions or any other nasty motive you want to ascribe to that.

Now...you may think that JD started that global trend and that the power of suggestion on this forum is why people half way across the world wear red shoes for good luck when they watch football, play darts and pool and you're entitled to think that.  However I tend to think the Chinese potentially had a little more to do with that that than this l'il ole Hep C forum and why that has to be a contentious issue because I think people outside this forum might wear red shoes cause the Chinese influenced that is beyond me.

So, if wearing short-shorts and a skimpy T-shirt and flip-flops, here in steamy Florida is more to my liking and my 'feeling sexy-like a teeny bopper feeling', then I can substitute that for the red high heels stilletto's??  I hope so cuz you won't see me in them things!  I'd end up in the ER from a broken ankle cuz I just can't walk in them!   AND that wouldn't be much of a celebration then!  Just wondering... yup, when you get your SVR, wear whatever makes you feel good!

I did wear red stilettos for my EOT, not for my SVR.

For my SVR, I wore a red thong, and drove around in my red car. It was a dare. Was it for luck, love or sex? ... a little bit of everything, I think and it worked wonders. :)

The only weird thing was that I'm hooked on running shoes, so I wore them, too. They were white and orange. :(

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you and wishing you every success. Your SVR is coming, and I know you'll never give up.

Susan

P.S. It's nice to look like a teeny bopper - I'm stuck in that style almost always and can't grow up or out of it.
