All this talk of food is making me very hungry. Merry Christmas to you all!
Oh yeah I remember the Kluski, golombki, and perogi with a big Yum, but the head cheese, pigs feet and then theres the dreaded blood sausage.........
But mostly the wonderful women from the head honcho with the babushka (scarf) sitting on the rocking chair, pinching my brothers cheeks, the perogi tasting and tea w/ milk and sugar. and most of all the simple interactions of love and caring, appreciating the small things and sharing. Lucky to have experienced that kind of love.
My ex in laws are Italian and I loved that too, its all the same, with a little twist here and there. More tomato, wish we could remember we are all brothers and sisters,,however far removed. I wish you all the best.

Galumpkies! Yummy. I was the little Italian girl who lived in a Polish neighborhood and grew up eating the wonderful Polish dishes my babysitter made. There was a neighborhood store down the street owned by an old Polish lady who we called Babcia. One entire front window had penny candy in it and she taught me how to count to ten in Polish so I wouldn't get cheated. I still remember how to count to this day. I haven't thought about that in years.
jeden, dwoch, trzy, czerty, piec, szesc, siedem, osiem, dziewiec, dziesiec
LOL, Pro....
"Even now, given the choice of my 72 weeks of tx or borscht and kapusta, I'd have to think for awhile which I'd choose"
If you added headcheese to the mix, I'd have to think on those choices as well!
"but we kids would have died before eating Borscht" ROFL!, I couldn't agree more. My grandmother always made borscht for Easter(sliced hardboiled eggs to float on top), and I dreaded it, kapusta fell in the same camp. Even now, given the choice of my 72 weeks of tx or borscht and kapusta, I'd have to think for awhile which I'd choose!!!
I am not at all polist (english/Italian) but love pierogies.
Would you care to share your recipe for the dumpling part?
Christman eve is at my mom's. Next morning is at my step daughters with her 4 kids and hubby. Christmas day dinner is lasagna at my house and any stragglers are welcome here.
A few years back, my sister and I made dozens of pierogi with different fillings - and of course, we had to taste-test them all! I have an 81 year old Polish mom, but we kids would have died before eating Borscht. Still love pickled pigs feet, but my kids would disown me if I fed it to them.
Quiet Christmas here - run to the kids to deliver Christmas packages then maybe treat myself to a movie or break out the x-country skis. We sure have enough snow for it! Working Christmas Eve.
I might actually try to make the white borscht, but none can compare to my godmothers. I only know a few swear words. and I cant spell em.
Hopefully this year will bring us all closer to SVR. I have so many abbreviations to learn over the next couple of weeks.
Love,
Mary
That Kapusta ought to knock the hep c virus right out of your system!!! I can remember as a kid my father used to have a big crock down in the basement making that rotting cabbage and pigs feet--powerful stuff!!
Best perogies I've ever had are made with blueberrys and sugar, boil'em up, slap some butter on them...Sweet....
No gołąbki or borscht?
Wesolych Swiat Bozego Narodzenia and a Szczesliwego Nowego Roku!!!

mouth watering even on tx! most of my family has gone west to ski and be with grand baby. i decided to stay home with an old pal and my god daughter who comes here from college as her real home is hong kong. quiet but festive i expect. i will keep the food simple; capon, mashed potato, acorn squash, broccoli rabe and salad. i just cant get excited cooking. i will make a cider toast to all the heppers who still suffer in hopes that the new year will bring many miracles. all the best to u, babs
