neupogen

Does anyone know if the body kicks in after awhile while one is on Neupogen, or do you have to keep taking it?  Does anyone know what makes it kick in if it does?  How long did people have to take it before it started working without having to take it anymore?

My husband had to take Neupogen his first treatment and it just knocked him out, he hated it and I couldn't stand seeing him on it.

When we found out he relapsed, I started searching for alternatives to Neupogen and found an article written by an Oncologist who put his patients on what essentially amounted to Shark Liver Oil. I could not find the specific fish oil he mentioned, but when I googled it I kept coming up with "Nordic" shark liver oil, and it made sense to me because I remembered the article mentioned that it had to be cold water fish.

I found Nordic Shark Liver Oil on many herb and supplement websites, and started my husband on it immediately. During his entire 2nd treatment he never had to take Neupogen once. I know it worked because the one time his WBC dropped too low he told me that he had stopped taking it a few weeks before because they "melted" together. I reordered it and the next CBC showed his WBC back up and out of the danger zone. For my husband, this turned out to be a little bit of a miracle. I had him take 4 capsules a day (2 in the AM and 2 in the PM) of 500 MG.

Can't say it would work the same for everyone, but it's worth a shot for this small but much needed reprieve.

Good luck,
Debbe

Good hair advice.  I've always wanted thick hair, always has been thin.  We'll see what grows back in.

Shot 6 last night.

I used Nioxin shampoo for thinning hair and thought it really helped.  I have thick wavy hair, although short, and having flat lifeless hair was really odd to me.  I did kind of like it though -- I guess you always want want you don't have, and this was my chance to have straight hair.  I could wear a baseball cap and not have hat hair, and it always looked good in the morning.  Now that it is back to normal it is sticking up all over the place every morning --Lyle Lovett hair, LOL.  WHat week are you on?

Yeah, and DEEP into the bones I feel the aches.  So far so good with the tx.  Sometimes a little dizzy, that's all now.  Hair getting drier.  Can't complain, although I just did.  Chuckle.

Thanks for the input!  My ANC is 425.  Low, too.  I hope my body starts to kick in sometime soon.

It was when my ANC dropped to 400 for two weeks that I started the Neupogen.  I have to admit not feeling side effects much, but so much was masked by the treatment drugs.  After I was done with tx I continued the Neupogen for about a month because my ANC was slow to recover.  At that time, I could really feel the side effects of the Neupogen alone, and I would call it bone aches.  It was the way I feel after I had been mountain hiking all day, and hadn't used certain muscles for a long time (it is really really flat here in West Texas)

Nuepogen, my favorite complaint. I blame it on everything from global warming to my slow dial-up.
From what my nurse told me it all depends on how your body responds. Some people start out doing a given amount, and gradually decrease it due to thier wbc levels coming up. Others land up increasing it.Some do it and/or procrit for the entire tx. I do my shot after I've done my CBC, same day.  I was doing two weekly, then it was raised to three and I tried it but refused to do that again. My ANC hasn't risen other than from 400 to 500, not making my Doc happy but I haven't had any infections either. That may have something to do with my staying away from people.  Now, my interferon has been reduced and I'm doing neup once weekly. Honestly I don't entirely understand it. I know the neup gives a short lived boost, upping the wbc.  I don't know if that is any help but if you want to complain about the stuff, I'm your girl.

Neupogen seems to be fast acting, but I don't think it triggers anything in our own systems to pick up the blood cell production. It doesn't last too long either.

Ideally you would get your CBC the day before the next neupogen shot is due.  If the ANC is high you could delay the shot.  I started doing the Neupogen every other week, then every 10 days, then once a week and twice a couple of times.

Sure does.  Thanks.  I was wondering about the reversal, too.
