One more thing: You can always ask to be prescribed the brand name of the medication...but 1. your medical insurer may not agree to pay for it and 2. that's because it is going to be very expensive, compared to the generic.
Just my 2 cents. The VAST majority of generic drugs are perfectly fine.
Hi Lisa: I'm in the exact same place as you.
I was just diagnosed with high blood pressure, and the doctor prescribed toprol xl, 25 mgs.
Try not to worry about stuff you read on the internet. You can google "aspirin" and find all kinds of horror stories, and it is one of the safest drugs in the world for most folks.
We are on very, VERY low doses of this drug. I've only been on mine 2 days! I know that some generics made in India can contain fillers and preservatives that don't agree with some people....but if you were going to have a bad reaction it would have happened already.
How have you been feeling on this medication so far? Toprol is a selective beta blocker that lowers BP by slowing down the heart. It is considered one of the safest blood pressure medications available...in fact, it is commonly prescribed right after a heart attack.
My ex-huband is on it and told me his doctor thinks it should be in the water supply. Beta blockers have been prescribed for years, and used to be called "stage-fright medicine." My sister-in-law was a concert flutist and would get pounding heart beat before she had to go on stage. Her phsycian prescribed beta blockers for her, and they helped tremendously.
Drugs get recalled all the time...including those produced in the United States. If yours had been on that list, you would have been contacted by your pharmacy.
Try not to worry...good luck!
