transplant in May 2008 and started developing genital warts (perianal to be exact) several weeks after the transplant. I have been treated with Aldara, but the cream had no effect what so ever after about 17 weeks of use. My general physician has been very hands
off in terms of addressing the issue (she first referred to the warts as "venereal disease") and has been referring me to a specialist for the past 5 weeks. I'd discussed the issue with my BMT oncology team when she first prescribed the Aldara and they told me to follow her professional opinion. But, to be honest, I feel she is being very judgmental in dealing with the problem. I have never "received" anal sex
's Lymphoma) and am very wary of any possible new cancers because of that. Most specialists will not see a patient without a prior referral, but with the increased size, discomfort and pain of the warts, I am ready to resolve this problem myself. When speaking to another physician/specialist, what should I let them know in terms of how my bone marrow transplant could have affected the warts? Could the warts have developed due to a lowered immune system (due to the high dose chemotherapy of the BMT)? Also, what, if any, can I do myself to keep the warts from progressing any further before I can actually get a specialist to provide the appropriate treatment that I may need? Thank you very much for your help!
You most likely had the infectin and just never knew it until the out break you can have HPV for years/decades without an outbreak. Most likely your immune system being low due to your procedure is what caused the sudden out break and may be the reason the aldra cream is not working.
Most cases of HPV will clear on their own in2 years but it can be treated by being frozen off or nitrogen...
When speaking with a new doctor you most def. want to make sure you give then all of your past history because that may effect what you can have done to treat the warts. All in all HPV is not that much of a big deal and I don't think you need to worry about cancer from these warts, it is very rare to have that occurance.
