Craving for salt

What will be the result if I eat too much salt. As I have end stage renal failure I developed a craving for salt. I took some salt tablets, but as the craving persisted I started to drink some salt water; a glass of water with a teaspoon of salt, daily. My craving is not so bad now, but it is not completely gone either.
How will I know when my kidneys have stopped functioning completely?
