Edema Question

I saw a Nephrologist approximately a month ago for protein in the urine. The Creatinine ratio is 888.9 and I understand it should be less than 30.
About a week after seeing him, I started swelling significantly in the feet, ankles, and legs. I had an appointment to see him next week. However, his office called and changed my appointment to July 30th - more than another month.
I've already been swelling for about three weeks. Friends have told me to limit water intake and I've also been told to increase water to flush it out. What should I do until I can see the doctor?

Hi Katie I would not wait for the Doctors appointment it appears you have Nephrotic Syndrome which is known as a Kidney disorder... Nephrotic Syndrome allows a loss of proteins thru urination which would explain your high creatnine ratio and the swelling please have this looked into

Hi Ma'am,
I'm glad i could be of help. It's good you are taking medications for the swelling. It's hard to give medications over the net because i don't know your medical history. Take care always and regards.

Thanks Rowena,

Hope you're having a good 4th of July.

Well, the swelling is better today.  When I saw the Nephrologist he put me on Exforge.  I called his office and told them I couldn't wait until the 30th due to the extreme swelling.  They took me off Exforge and changed it to Diovan -- this was on Monday and today the swelling is somewhat better.  Not perfect, but quite a bit better.
You give some good information in your last response which I will take to heart.
If I can just get some of the fatigue to cooperate now, I'd be doing much better.  :)
Thanks again for all your great information.

How are you? Dietary changes, in addition to cutting back the amount of sodium eaten, may also help reduce edema. You should  still drink the usual 8 glasses of water, however, there is an emphasis on the salt restriction to reduce fluid retention. Foods that worsen edema, such as alcohol, caffeine, sugar, dairy products, soy sauce, animal protein, chocolate, olives, and pickles, should be avoided. Diuretic herbs can also help relieve edema. One of the best herbs for this purpose is dandelion (Taraxacum mongolicum), since, in addition to its diuretic action, it is a rich source of potassium. Hydrotherapy using daily contrast applications of hot and cold, either compresses or immersion,  may also be helpful. You should also be getting your proper amount of sleep.

Take care and regards. Please do update us on your next appointment wit hyour doctor.

Thanks for your information.  Since I can't get in with the doctor for another month, should I increase or decrease fluid intake?
I have been keeping my feet elevated as much as possible.  I get up for short periods of time until my feet swell to the point I can't bend at the ankles then I lay back down and elevate them.
I'm a 24/7 caregiver for my husband so I have to work around that.  The only other thing I'm noticing is the extreme fatigue.  All I want to do is sleep.
    Thanks again,

How are you? Having a very high creatinine ratio, your edema could be a result of your kidney problem.  Usually, treatment of edema is directed at the underlying cause; this may be done by removing the excess fluid with diuretics, elevating the legs above your heart while lying down, using compression stockings or eating a low salt diet to reduce fluid retention and swelling.   It would be good to see your doctor regarding this for proper management.

The things to watch out for are: when you feel short of breath, you have chest pain,   you have decreased urine output,   your swollen foot or leg is red or warm to the touch or you have a fever. It is very important to seek medical help if you notice these symptoms.

Take care and keep us posted.
