In normal terms...

I am a 33 yr old male and I recently had an MRI on my chest for a "mass." As it turns out, the mass was what they called "lipomatous tissue" but no evidense of an enhancing or infiltrative mass.

They did find a complex lesion on my right kidney. I will quote the test results:

"The liver, spleen pancreas and adrenals are normal. There is a 1.9 x 1.8 cm complex lesion in the right kidney, which is of intermediate signal on the T2 images and high signal on the fat-sat T1 image, with some areas that are nonenhancing and other that slightly enhance."

I think I have a basic idea what this means...I have a cyst (or tumor) on my right kidney. Am I reading these test results right? Do any of you need more information. I have made an appointment with a Urulogist already. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your reply. I did have a CT Scan done last week with contrast. It turns out the mass is wedge shaped...about 2.3 CM X 1.4 CM. It still shows up with only slight enhancement. The test results also stated that the mass is "suspious of a transitional cell neoplasm." A uroscopy and cystoscopy has been ordered to biopsy the mass. It should be noted that no other masses were found anywhere in my abdomin. It should also be noted that I have no pain in the suspected area. I do urinate frequently but I also drink close to a 6 pack of bottled water a day. I have no visable blood in my urine but a test did turn up a "microscopic" amount in my urine the other day.

I am nervous because there is a family history of bladder cancer in my family and I have been told bladder cancer is the same thing as transitional cell cancer.

I was told by my Urologist that there is a 50/50 chance it is cancer...the biopsy will show.  He also told me that I have a few options.

1. It is not cancer and it could be a fat deposit.

2. It is a tumor and we caught it in the very beginning. He will "laser ablate" it, maybe some chemo and lifelong tests every three months.

3. It is bigger than expected and the remove my kidney and I have chemo.

Are these all viable options? Are there other options to consider? What questions should I be asking? Should I seek a second opinion after the biopsy?

I honestly don't know what to ask and emotionally, I can't think of anything except the above questions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!!

Hi,

At this point this complex lesion may be a cyst, a fatty tissue or fibrous tissue. An abdominal CT scan of the kidneys may be able to help. Kidney cysts are usually incidental findings and may be classified based on their appearance in a CT Scan . A simple cystic mass in the kidney with no associated symptoms may not require further evaluation and may be monitored only after 6 months.

Do you have any associated symptoms like abdominal pain or changes in urinary patterns?

Was a baseline urinalysis done to rule out an underlying infection?
