Hi.
I mentioned in my previous posts that sexual intercourse is one of the modes by which HTLV can be transmitted. Male to female transmission is more common. HTLV-1 is less infectious compared to HIV. HTLV-2 is less readily transmitted sexually compared with HTLV-1. There is really no exact period of time before transmission to occur.
Hope this helps.
hi,
i'd greatly appreciate your help. i read somewhere that the sexual transmission of htlv-1 is inefficient for both males and females. i also read that you would have to be with someone for at least a year for transmissin to occur. is this true?
thank you
Hi.
HTLV can be transmitted from mother to child (especially in breast milk), through sexual activity, and through blood via contaminated transfusions and needles. Female to male transmission by sexual intercourse, though not common, have been reported.
Can HTLV not be transmitted female to male?
Hi.
HTLV-1 is the cause of at least two important diseases: adult T cell leukemia/lymphoma and tropical spastic paraparesis. This is transmitted by blood transfusion, needle sharing, breast feeding, and from male to female by sexual intercourse. HTLV-2, on the other hand, may play a role in certain neurologic, hematologic, and dermatologic diseases. This is transmitted by the same routes as HTLV-1.
Viral isolation can be performed to test for both HTLV-1 and HTLV-2.
Hope this helps.
