nodules in lower right lobe

by Lincolnslp, Sep 03, 2008 03:57PM
I posted yesterday and received a response.  I had a chest CT scan and they found only a 4mm and 7mm in the lower right lobe.  I smoked years ago but stopped when I was 23.  I started smoking again about four years ago but had no more than 5 cigarettes per day.  The report was very vague no coment was made on calcification but no spickulation and borders were smooth.  Do you think they are benign?

Hi,

The history of prior melanoma is indeed important. It would be more crucial if you know how high your risk is for developing metastatic disease. This would be based on characteristics such as depth of invasion and the presence of ulcers.
In general, involvement of melanoma on an arm would mean involving lymph nodes near the axilla first before involving the lung. The description of the lung cyst also doesn’t sound like metastasis. Offhand, there doesn’t seem to be any clear reason to worry much. If you have any lung disease or if you smoke, this may account for the presence of the cyst more than the prior melanoma.
Stay positive.

Hi,

Please ignore the other post on this thread – that was meant for shaerich on another thread on this forum.
Your concerns about the nodules are indeed valid. The presence of calcification is indeed one of the things that are sought during the evaluation. Based on size and the regularity of the borders, then the nodules seem more benign than malignant. Repeating the scan after a few months would help further establish how rapid or how slow they are growing – a more critical proof as to their behavior. Stay positive.
