The tuberculin test involves inoculation with a protein derivative into the skin.
If the person tested has had exposure to tuberculosis, the skin would react by hardening over the site it was placed. It only means that there was an exposure. It cannot tell whether or not the person has active tuberculosis.
Different places (depending on how TB occurs within the general population) have different sizes which would be labelled as positive, so do different people with underlying illnesses like HIV or if they had a prior vaccination with BCG. If there are no known risk factors, the cut-off is 15 mm, so your husband would be negative.
If your husband has no chronic cough or weight loss or fever, he probably doesn't have active tuberculosis.
