23OCT98
My wife just started her 9th week of pregnancy and is bleeding, spotting to heavy period and stops when her feet are put up.  We miscarried on April 1, 1998 in a previous pregnancy.
Bleeding and lower back cramping started on 18OCT98.  A sonogram on Monday, 19OCT98, showed a heartbeat of 115-122 BPM.
Our doctor has done 2 examinations since the bleeding started and says that the cervix is closed and he cannot tell where the blood is coming from.  His orders are to stay off her feet and take it easy.
I am worried that my we will lose the baby due to the bleeding.
If any one has had to deal with the same thing, I would greatly appreciate a response.

Dear Steve:
Bleeding and cramping are symptoms of a "threatened miscarriage". The reassuring information is that the cervix is closed and the ultrasound imaged a living baby.
Approximately 25% of women experience bleeding in the first 3 months of pregnancy. In the 50% who have a successful pregnancy, the cause of the bleeding is usually unclear. There is no specific treatment: rest has been a long standing prescription.
