My husbands psychiatrist and my psychiatrist say that taking Prozac while pregnant is fine.  However my gynecologist says that I should not take Prozac the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.  I have been off the Prozac for a month and a half, I am not pregnant yet.  Me being off the Prozac has cause a lot of problems between me and my husband, because of my moods.  To get to my question I need to know if it is okay to take Prozac during the whole nine months of being pregnant?  Will it cause any development problems with the baby?  Thanks again for your time!  Liisa

I've gone through years of infertility treatments.  I was in need of a medication such as Prozac all those years but didn't seek it because I didn't think you could take it even before a pregnancy!  Now, I've found out that not only can you take it while trying to conceive, but it may even help you to conceive.  I just started Prozac 2 weeks ago and relieved after 6 years of knowing I needed serotonin balancing.  Anyway, check out Dr. Beer's Inciid site because there are some posts I've made and others regarding Prozac and other anti-depressant drugs.  My opinion (and Dr. Beer's I believe) is that it is best to discontinue the med, once a pregnancy has been confirmed.  I'm sure there would be some exceptions and some posters have mentioned they took it throughout pregnancy.  The little reading I did on it seemed to indicate that there is no problem taking it during the beginning of the pregnancy, whereas there have been some problems such as low birth rate if taken in the last trimester of pregnancy.  Seems to be the opposite of what you have been told.  So, what I would say is that maybe plan to go off it if you get pregnant, but feel fine about being on it while trying to get pregnant.

Carol,
Thank you so much for your help.  After looking in the Internet about Prozac and Pregnancy they are all pretty much stating the same thing you did.  I did talk to my doctor and I have decided to stay on Prozac until I find out I am 100% pregnant and then at that time decide how I feel then.  I tried to find Dr. Beer's web site but I had no luck.  What is the Internet address?  How are you doing on Prozac?  It has helped me so much.  For once in my life I feel "even!"  Thanks again!
