medication during pregnancy

by mariane__0, Oct 10, 1998 12:00AM

I JUST FOUND OUT THAT I AM PREGNANT. MY PERIODS ARE VERY IRREGULAR SO I DON'T KNOW EXACTLY WHEN I CONCEIVED.  THE PROBLEM IS THAT I TOOK CIPROFLOXACIN FOR A UTI ABOUT FOUR WEEKS AFTER MY LAST PERIOD.  I TOOK 500MG TWICE A DAY FOR SIX DAYS. I'M VERY WORRIED THAT THIS COULD HAVE HARMED THE FETUS. PLEASE HELP.
Dear Marianne:
Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic for which we do not have studies on pregnant women. There is reassuring information from animal studies and reassuring anecdotatal information from use in very sick pregnant women.
In early pregnancy, most agents cause no harm because the early development is so resiliant or the effect is so bad that the pregnancy does not continue. Since you have a continuing pregnancy and were exposed to a medication that has nothing bad known, your baby has the same chance (97%) as every other baby of being healthy.
