ovulation prediction kits

by Jeny__0, Feb 26, 1999 12:00AM

I have recently started the ovulation kit.  My period started on Feb. 15.  On the
24th, I was feeling cramping.  There was none vaginal fluid.  The next day,
day 11, the 25th I started the kit, the test line was lighter than the reference
line.  However today day 12, the test line is even lighter than day 11.  Is
this normal?  Have I missed my days of ovulation?  Should I continue to take the
  tests?
  Thank you, Jenny

Dear Jenny:
The test kit is negative when the test line is lighter in color than the reference line and positive when it is darker. Ovulation occurs, on average, 14 days before menstrual flow. One takes the average length of recent cycles (lets choose 27 days) and subtract 14 (27-14 = 13). We expect ovulation about day 13, with a range of plus/minus 3 days: hence ovulation could be as early as day 10 and as late as day 16. Thus, testing is started on day 9. In future cycles, the timing of ovulation may be refined so that fewer days of testing are required, thereby saving money as kits only have 5 days of test.
