post-partum hyperthyroidism

Posted By Amy S. on September 29, 1998 at 00:18:33:

I have a five-month old.  I was recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism through a blood test (I have all the symptoms).  My doctor wants to do a radioactive scan, which means I will have to stop nursing my baby for two days.  This does not seem like a huge problem, but my baby has never taken a bottle and the stress I will face from these two days will be enormous.  I want to know what additional information this scan will tell the doctor and if I could be treated for the condition without having the test done (or postponing the test for a few more months).  In other words, is the test really necessary at this time or is he being extra-cautions.  Can the condition be successfully treated without the scan and while I continue to breastfeed?
