Scary Nephrologist Appt.

Hi, I saw my nephro today and she said my kidney function is reduced.  My GFR is down to 53. It might just be that my kidneys are not healed fully from my two surgeries in Sept. and Oct. I will get retested tomorrow. But what freaked me out was the diagnosis code she checked off on the lab request was acute renal failure! I am trying to comfort myself by saying that it is just a code for insurance, but I am still freaked out.
When I researched GFR I saw that I had already been in stage 2 Chronic Kidney Disease according to my tests in June but now I am in stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease.

When I asked about Renal tubular Acidosis, she said the Urocit K is what she would treat RTA with anyway and I already am using that.  I never even got to ask about the Biofilms, I was thrown for such a loop when she got to the talk about my decrease in  Kidney Function.

Oh no, this is so stressful.  I am hoping it is trauma from the surgeries.  Pls. keep us posted.    Can I ask a ? .. what does GFR stand for.  Maybe we can get an acronym page going and we can put it into the Health Pages.  I'm sure I know what it stands for but cannot recall (too early in the AM I think).

This roller coaster ride we are on really isn't fair.

WHat was your GFR rating?

What is your creatine rate

Bun?

Mine was down a lot before the surgery and I am waiting for my tests from after. There was only one patient I could find whose creatine and bun rating went up /GFR down prost op but it returned to better the before the surgery in a few months!  At least everything I read about the procedure showed an improvement in kidney function post op to preop once healed. Keep in mind it sounds like your uro did a little more too... so healing may take a little more time.

my GFR rating was 63.4%...(before the surgery  it said 59.4% FOR THREE MONTHS, was later term kidney failure??)  it had a big warning on the paper, my creatine and bun were up but still on the very top of normal, but my URO said not to get worked up that this is a est. number and not an issues unless it continues and other markers are met. YOu might want to wait a month and redo the blood tests to check?
Nephrologists watch those things a little close.

I am waiting to get the more recent lab work and I will keep you posted and you let me know as well!

This might also be a good question for the Urologist board?

Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) describes the flow rate of filtered fluid through the kidney. It is an indicator of how efficient the kidney is functioning.

It was only 20 days post op so it probably is due to the surgery.

My BUN is 16
Creatnine is 1.12
eGFR is 53

In June my BUN was 16
Creatnine was .98
eGFR was >60 Lab does not report actual number if GFR over 60.

(When I used an online GFR calculator my June GFR was 69 and the current one was 56)

I was also thinking an acronym page would be helpful.

I agree...your numbers are up, but like you said pretty early post op.

I am getting my tests and radiologist reports back today, the uro's office just called this am to say I can pick them up.  I will let you know if there was an increase in my numbers as well since it was done one week post op too.

Again I would say wait till after Christmas and ask them to redo the blood test esp.
since you are feeling so much better, then see!  I would be mroe concerned if you were feeling worse not better!!

I didn't get this sent today till now and my husband came home with my reports..
My Creatine, and bun were up and circled.  My GFR rating though had improved since April though was still lower then normal but up to about 70.  I think we should like i said repeat them soon to see that they have improved as suggested by now.

glom filtration rate :) how much the kidneys . if said acute failure do not be concerned, your egfr is probably right back up. if it says CKD then worry!!!! thats chronic. 53 is stage 3, which is exaclty my number. have it retested and i bet its right back up there!
